The Battle for the Right to Strike: An Intellectual History of the Networks of Employers, Trade Unions, and Social Ethicists Preparing, Defining, and Promoting Gaudium et Spes’ Teaching on Labor (1957-1968) KU Leuven
On December 7, 1965 the Second Vatican Council recognized the workers’ right to strike (Gaudium et Spes, § 68). This novelty in conciliar history and Catholic Social Teaching is a symbol for the hard-fought battle of networks with years of practical experience concerning the meaning of labor. This project will develop an intellectual history of three international representative networks that prepared, defined and further promoted a ...

History, time and memory after violent conflict: a metahistorical analysis of the Peruvian transitional justice process (1980-present). Ghent University
This project starts out from the insight that a tension exists in Peruvian transitional justice practices between indigenous survivors, the state and NGOs. As a hypothesis I state that this tension is shaped by, among other factors, the collision between transitional justice’s search for closure on the one hand, and the presence of the past felt by survivors of violent conflict on the other hand.
Social Justice, Identity Construction and National Identification: A Social History of War Nationalism in Belgium, 1914-1925 Ghent University
This study on national identification in Belgium during and immediately after the German

“When times collide”: A meta-historical analysis of history and memory in post-war Guatemala. Ghent University
Between 1960 and 1996, Guatemala was shattered by an internal armed conflict that resulted in the death of 200,000 people, including genocide against the indigenous Mayan population. By conducting ethnographic field research I investigate different ways of dealing with the conflict and analyze their political implications. I aim at testing time concepts empirically by introducing them in transitional justice.
Creative anxiety. A conceptual history of creativity in education KU Leuven
Over the last few decades, creativity has become a central preoccupation in society. Its conceptualization as a universal force for harmony and economic prosperity is accompanied by the fear that it is insufficiently promoted, declining or even at risk of disappearing. The marriage between creativity and education, in particular, is portrayed as an unhappy one. This PhD argues that the anxiety surrounding creativity forms a constitutive ...
