This PhD focuses on non-parametric analysis of economic choice behaviour (both consumption and production behaviour). Contrary to more standard parametric techniques, non-parametric methods have as an advantage that they do not impose functional forms on the consumers' utilities or production technology. Virtually all developed countries and several developing countries haveset up a wide range of welfare programmes offering support to those in need. The non take-up of social assistance benefits may however seriously limit the anti-poverty effect of these programmes.
