Characterisation of the relation between florsitic diversity, soil microbial diversity and biogeochemical processes in a pristine wetland (Bierbza, Poland) Ghent University
With this project, we want to investigate whether there is a link between floristic diversity and microbial community structure and how this affects nitrogen biogeochemistry. The specific objectives are: 1. To study the effect of changeing plant diversity on microbial community structure and key microorganisms 2. To quantify N-biogeochemistry and the uptake of N-species by micro-organisms under varying plant diversity 3. To study whether ...
NEWS DIVING: News Sentiment Diversity, Index construction and Generative models Ghent University
The digitalization of the media sector has disrupted the access to news News articles are now available at a large scale and low cost across many news sources In spite of the increase in news volume, economic agents often only consume news provided by a non-diversified subset of news sources The lack of diversification reveals itself in both the choice of topics covered and the sentiment used in the news articles This may lead to a biased ...
Sabbatical Maddy Janssens: Valorisation and Renewal of Diversity Research KU Leuven
My main scientific activity will be aimed at valorising my diversity research through writing a book. The set-up is an accessible but scientifically substantiated book that can sharpen the debate about diversity in Flanders (and the Netherlands) and provide a new form of diversity management. In this book, in addition to my voice, I want to bring out a variety of voices (minority groups, HR managers, policymakers, civil society,…) from ...
Sabbatical Karen Phalet: Making and unmaking boundaries: Diversity and inequality in European migration contexts.(BOUNDARIES) KU Leuven
During my sabbatical I want to develop interdisciplinary research on cultural border dynamics against the background of new forms of migration-related diversity and inequality in Europe. Building on cross-national and longitudinal data and studies with minorities and migrants in recent years, I want to put together empirical puzzle pieces in an integrative approach to border dynamics at the micro level (in ethnically diverse social ...
The functional significance of the diversity in leaf-out phenology of forest trees for understorey plant communities Ghent University
Numerous experimental studies have showed that species diversity may influence ecosystem functioning. Yet, little is known about (1) the functional role of plant diversity in natural ecosystems, especially forests, (2) the importance of organisational levels of biodiversity other than species richness and (3) the relations between biotic groups. Here we will study how the variation in leaf-out timing between trees (U+201Cphenological ...

Fragrant flowers and perceptive pollinators – floral scent and the evolution of tree diversity Ghent University
In the tropics, floral odours are particularly important for attracting pollinators, and for creating and maintaining species boundaries. We propose to study floral odours of species of Annonaceae in Bangladesh. Floral odours will be captured in the field and analysed using GC-MS. Volatile profiles will be examined against existing phylogenetic hypotheses to gain insight in the evolution of floral odours.
