Cultural evolution, sexual selection, and the case of art appreciation: integrating direct and indirect selection pressures KU Leuven
A central issue in cultural evolution theory which is whether we, humans, adopt cultural traits on the basis of their match with our evolved psychology or whether we adopt traits on account of the context in which they are embedded (e.g., whether they are associated with a successful individual). The issue is equivalent to the question Darwin already posed about the peahen: does she admire the peacocks tail (or train in jargon) on account of ...
The effect of bacterial warfare on resistance in Salmonella. Towards a more optimal selection of Live Microbial Formulations. KU Leuven
The rapid rise of antibiotic resistance is compromising our ability to effectively control bacterial infections. There is a pressing need for alternative treatments to substitute or complement the use of antibiotics. Probiotics are increasingly attracting attention in this regard, particularly due to their multifaceted modes of action to combat pathogens. Despite their promising potential and long history of use, the exact ways in which they ...
Single crystal PErovskite Charge Transport Engineering for high-performance Radiation detection (SPECTER) KU Leuven
Chemical engineering of interfaces for tailored opto-electronic properties KU Leuven
LED and laser diode based illumination systems with a tuneable radiation pattern KU Leuven
The adoption of solid-state light sources for general lighting applications was mainly driven by the continuous need for efficiency improvements in the lighting industry. Most luminaires nowadays, make use of LEDs that can be easily dimmed if necessary. Introducing inexpensive sensors into these lighting fixtures can further reduce energy consumption by monitoring the environment and adjusting the illumination accordingly. A simple example ...
The impact of intrinsic defects in the absorber on the performance of CuInxGa1-xSe2 solar cells and on conventional characterization techniques. Ghent University
In this proposal we will use electric detected FTIR-spectroscopy and regression analysis of optical variants of DLTS to determine the influence of intrinsic defects in CIGS solar cells on the kinetics of charge carriers. This will allow to determine their impact on the performance and propose a protocol to detect their presence via conventional characterization techniques using SCAPS simulations.
Sensor fusion and adaptive learning for optimization and control of Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing – with applications to functionally graded materials KU Leuven
A niche research trend in advanced materials is the creation of materials that are non-isotropic or graded in single or multiple directions of a component, which is referred to as functionally graded materials (FGM). Directional material properties are seen in nature in various forms and this can be utilized in engineering applications where a gradation in thermal, mechanical or tribological properties are required. FGMs can be created with ...
Development of low-power Vibro-Thermal Tomography for 3D super-resolution imaging of defects in composites Ghent University
High-performance fiber reinforced polymers (or composites) are widely used in high-tech applications (e.g. in aerospace, wind energy), and require reliable and cost-effective non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques to assure their integrity. A profound NDT technique should not only detect a defect, but also extract quantitative information about its size, depth and severity. Ultrasonic and X-ray techniques are mostly used for inspection of ...
Damage imaging in Composites by means of Nonlinear Time-reversed Elastic Waves Ghent University
Fiber reinforced polymers (or composites) have excellent specific stiffness and strength as well as corrosion resistance, which makes them very attractive for high-tech applications in aerospace, renewable energy … Though, composites are also known for their high susceptibility to internal defects (introduced during manufacturing cycle, or during in-service loading) which could compromise their structural integrity. Accurate and ...
