Distributed cognition in Robert Musil's and Dietmar Dath's fictions of man-machine-hybridity Ghent University
Automatons and robots constitute an object of fascination and undiminished source of artistic inspiration. This interest precedes the actual coining of the word ‘robot’ itself and ranges well into antiquity. (Riskin 2010; Beatrice 2017; Tresch 2012; Kang 2011; Wood 2002) In more recent times, the fusion between man and machine has been discussed in the context of posthumanism. The declared goal of posthumanism is to surpass an anthropocentric ...

Why do firms save cash from cash flows? Evidence from firm-level estimation of cash-cash flow sensitivities Hasselt University KU Leuven
We construct firm-level estimates for the cash flow sensitivity of cash (CCFS) by modelling heterogeneous slopes in reduced-form cash equations. This approach allows identifying firms with a high, low or even negative savings propensity. We find that high CCFS firms have higher income variation, suggesting cash buffering is triggered by income shocks. High CCFS firms do not suffer from financing constraints measured by a wide selection of ...
The House As A Work In Movement, The Living Heritage Of LIC Housing By B.V. Doshi In India Hasselt University
This paper investigates the modernist example of Indian LIC housing by architect B.V. Doshi, which developed in the early seventies as an experiment in incrementalism. The pragmatic project was developed as amorphous dwellings that catered to the aspirations, challenges, and growth of the resident family, a topic that has recently reemerged. The combination of three different types of dwellings (focusing on individuals as well as family life) ...
The gut brain in a dish: Murine primary enteric nervous system cell cultures Hasselt University
Background The enteric nervous system (ENS) is an extensive neural network embedded in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract that regulates digestive function and gastrointestinal homeostasis. The ENS consists of two main cell types; enteric neurons and enteric glial cells. In vitro techniques allow simplified investigation of ENS function, and different culture methods have been developed over the years helping to understand the role of ENS ...
'Sulṭān awlād al-nās' or 'Amīr ibn Mamlūk'? Re-framing Khalīl ibn Shāhīn’s Zubdat Kashf al-Mamālik wa-Bayān al-Ṭuruq wa-l-Masālik Ghent University
Mustafa Banister’s analysis of the Zubdat al-kashf of Khalil b. Shahin takes us to exactly the period we have already identified as a time of conceptual change and the emergence of a possible group identity of the Mamluk descendants, i. e. the 15th century. His analysis—which includes a consideration of the author’s historical-social context as well as a contentual and narratological analysis of the text, which can be seen as a kind of universal ...
