Gas phase catalyzed production of novel cyclic building blocks for biodegradable polymers. KU Leuven
The development and introduction of synthetic plastics into the economy in the early 1900’s has significantly increased the standards of living worldwide. Many traditional materials such as wood, stone, metal and glass could suddenly be replaced by cheap, versatile polymers derived from copious petroleum reserves. Approximately one century later, scientists and researchers are now exploring more durable alternatives, such as bio-based and/or ...
Ecological roles of cyclic lipopeptides from plant-beneficial rhizobacteria: a chemical-biology approach to decipher primary functions of secondary metabolites. Ghent University
Plant roots often carry Bacillus and Pseudomonas bacteria that protect the plant against
pathogens. This beneficial effect (biocontrol) results from secretion of bacterial metabolites.
Those are either antimicrobial or trigger the plant's own defense responses. These
metabolites include cyclic lipopeptides (CLPs), which are biosurfactants composed of a fatty
acid tail linked to a cyclized oligopeptide. CLPs show ...

Cationic gold-catalyzed cyclizations for the preparation of complex azaheterocycles Ghent University
Cationic homogeneous Au(I)-catalysts will be evaluated for the synthesis of complex N-containing cyclic compounds. Firstly, both intra- and intermolecular 1,n-enyne cyclizations will be studied, where the attack of a N-nucleophile is crucial. Secondly, the reaction between in situ formed Au-vinylidenes and N-nucleophiles will be investigated.
Molecular control of microglial motility by P27 Kip1. Hasselt University
Translational research into novel therapies for pelvic floor disorders KU Leuven
Pelvic floor disorders, including pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and genitourinary syndrome of the menopause (GSM) decrease the quality of life of many women. The mainstay of therapy for POP is a surgical correction, either using native tissues or substitutes, usually referred to as mesh. Surgery may however cause complications, in particular when using mesh. The recommended treatment of GSM is hormonal replacement, yet many patients do not ...
