Shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient mercury isotopes studied through Coulomb excitation KU Leuven
This thesis describes the analysis and results of a series of Coulomb-excitation experiments on even-even neutron-deficient mercury isotopes aimed at obtaining a more detailed description of shape coexistence. Two experimental campaigns have been undertaken in the Summer of 2007 and 2008. Pure beams of 182,184,186,188Hg were produced and accelerated at the REX-ISOLDE radioactive-beam facility, located at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The beams ...
Shape Coexistence in the Neutron- Deficient Even-Even Hg182-188 Isotopes Studied via Coulomb Excitation KU Leuven Ghent University
Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85 MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0+ states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules ...
Structure of low-lying states in Sm-140 studied by Coulomb excitation KU Leuven
The electromagnetic structure of 140Sm was studied in a low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment with a radioactive ion beam from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The 2+ and 4+ states of the ground-state band and a second 2+ state were populated by multistep excitation. The analysis of the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections yielded reduced transition probabilities between all observed states and the spectroscopic quadrupole moment ...
Onset of collectivity in 96,98Sr studied via Coulomb excitation KU Leuven
A rapid onset of quadrupole deformation is known to occur around the neutron number 60 in the neutron-rich Zr and Sr isotopes. This shape change has made the neutron-rich A = 100 region an active area of experimental and theoretical studies for many decades now. We report in this contribution new experimental results in the neutron rich 96,98Sr investigated by safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN. Reduced ...
Electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes : Coulomb excitation of 182Hg, 184Hg, 186Hg and 188Hg Ghent University KU Leuven
The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass 182-188 Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The population of 0 + 1,2, 2(1,2)(+) and 4(1)(+) states was observed in ...
Coulomb excitation of 107In KU Leuven Ghent University
The radioactive isotope 107In was studied using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Two γ rays were observed during the experiment, corresponding to the low-lying 11/2+ and 3/2− states. The reduced transition probability of the 11/2+ state was determined with the semiclassical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The result is discussed in comparison to large-scale shell-model calculations, previous unified-model ...
STUDY OF OCTUPOLE COLLECTIVITY IN Nd-146 AND Sm-148 USING THE NEW COULOMB EXCITATION SET-UP AT ALTO KU Leuven
For certain combinations of protons and neutrons in atomic nuclei, a rise of a reflection asymmetry is expected. Experimental E3 strengths, which as a function of the neutron number peak at around N ≈ 88 and N ≈ 134, indicate enhanced octupole correlations as predicted by theory. Low-energy Coulomb excitation is a highly successful method for establishing the evolution of nuclear shapes, through the measurement of cross sections, to populate ...
Coulomb excitation of the 3− isomer in 70Cu KU Leuven Ghent University
Post-accelerated isomerically purified radioactive beams, available at the CERN On-Line Isotope Mass Separator facility using the resonant ionization laser technique, have been used to study the Coulomb excitation of the I π = 3− state in 70Cu (Z = 29, N = 41). While first results using a I π = 6− beam were reported previously, the present complementary experiment allows us to complete the study of the multiplet of states (3−, 4−, 5−, 6−) ...
