Genomic and transcriptoomproflering neuroblastoma: identification of prognostic diagnostic expression signatures, unraveling the MYCN transcriptional network and study of the biological role v chromosome 17q gain.. Ghent University
Next-generation Y chromosomal phylogeny for multidisciplinary applications. KU Leuven
The upswing of next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques provides opportunities for improving the human Y chromosomal phylogeny. Firstly, the enormous amount of new NGS data from multiple projects with different accuracies will be combined into a more accurate Y chromosomal phylogeny using acceptable computational power. Secondly, NGS data can be used to study the X-Y conversion on the Y chromosome and how does this affect the validity of ...
Analysis of chromosomal radiosensitivity/instability in triple negative and/or young breast cancer patients and patients with Fanconi anemia from South Africa Ghent University
Chromosomal radiosensitivity has been observed in breast cancer patients in European populations and is linked with DNA repair pathways. As triple negative, young breast cancer and Fanconi anemia patients frequently have defects in these pathways , the chromosomal radiosensitivity, instability and the link with DNA repair genes will be investigated in these patients.
Replication of in vivo maturation environment in vitro to reduce chromosomal aberrations Ghent University
Although oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) has undergone significant advancements, the systems that are currently in place still need to be further optimized. This project aims to develop an improved culture system for oocyte IVM able to reduce the frequency of polyspermy, which is one of the main causes of chromosomal aberrations in embryos produced in vitro.
Elucidating the immunomodulatory role of sex hormones in asthma Ghent University
Before puberty, asthma prevalence is highest in boys but there is a sharp decrease during puberty. Two thirds of adult asthma patients are female, who typically have a more severe phenotype and a lower quality of life compared to men. In addition to genetic and environmental factors these data suggest a pivotal role of sex hormones, namely testosterone (T), in the pathogenesis of asthma.

DNA-YFVax: A DNA-based vaccine platform for tailoring of live attenuated virus vaccines for human and veterinary use KU Leuven
PhD in the (epi-)genetic regulation and molecular control of meiotic recombination in plants KU Leuven
Meiosis is a specialized eukaryotic cell division, restoring ploidy levels during fertilization by halving the chromosome number. A key step of meiosis is meiotic recombination and crossovers (CO) formation, which results in reciprocal exchange of parental chromosomes. This gene reshuffling ensures the creation of chromosomes carrying novel combinations, making it a key process of interest for crop breeding programs that seek to bring a ...
The interactome and function of the PP1γ interactor RepoMan in mitotic spindle assembly KU Leuven
The role of RepoMan in chromosome-dependent microtubule nucleation
The assembly of a mitotic spindle that makes stable contacts with chromosomes is crucial for accurate cell division. Both the centrosomal and chromosomal pathway of microtubule nucleation contribute to the efficient build-up of the bipolar spindle. The growth of microtubules starts at the γ-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC), where γ-tubulin serves as a template for ...
New Insights on Human Y-chromosomal Variation for Forensic Familial Searching KU Leuven
Forensic DNA analysis has become the gold standard in the justice system to identify the perpetrator from biological traces found at the crime scene. Nevertheless, offender identification through standard DNA analysis can be challenging in mixed biological samples from sexual assault or murder cases. With a male perpetrator, as in the majority of the cases, it is possible to genotype for the male specific Y-chromosome (chrY). This analysis ...
