This project wants to critically investigate if and how colonial constructions and discourses are present in contemporary representations of former colonies (Congo, Rwanda and Burundi) in Belgian news reporting and vice versa. Drawing on a comparative design of a content analysis, a production analysis and an audience research, we examine the role of a shared colonial past.

The ore geology research line focusses on (1) Sediment-hosted deposits, such as stratiform Cu-Co deposits in the Central African Copperbelt and stratabound Zn-Pb deposits worldwide, and (2) Ta-Nb-Sn-Li pegmatite and Sn-W-Au quartz vein deposits in Central Africa (Burundi, DRC, Rwanda), Europe and the USA. A search and matching approach to intermediate trade in agricultural products in developing countries Ghent University
This project develops a search and matching model to study the dynamics among intermediate traders in agricultural products in developing countries. The model is used to predict policy implications of regional specialisation, investment in transport and communication infrastructure, and trade reforms for agricultural development. The models will be tested empirically in comparing agricultural policies in Burundi and Rwanda.

The African Great Lakes region has experienced significant turmoil and violence, with historical narratives often used by politicians and actors to fuel conflict.
