Use of an AAV9-based system for vectored immunoprophylaxis (VIP) targeting SOD1 in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). KU Leuven
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult-onset neurodegenerative disease that is almost always fatal. In 20% of familial ALS patients, ALS is caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene. These mutations alter the conformation of SOD1 and it starts to form aggregates. It is thought that misfolded SOD1 is toxic, causing motor neuron death. One possible way to treat ALS is to reduce the levels of toxic SOD1. Antibodies ...
Research to establish specific product and process characteristics from an innovative technological process to produce inserts loaded with peptides/proteins. University of Antwerp
In the research group Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy a new method of preparation for ocular dosage forms loaded with peptides and/or proteins has been developed. In this proof-of-concept study, product characteristics and process parameters from the invention will be optimized. The physico-chemical characteristics of the intermediate product and final product from the innovative technological process are evaluated together with ...
Development, evaluation and optimization of ocular drug delivery concepts for the use in dry eye syndrome and retinal disorders. University of Antwerp
Several ocular drug delivery concepts will be developed, characterized in vitro and ex vivo and evaluated in vivo. First the peptide cyclosporine is selected for the development of the concepts. Afterwards, the most promising formulation will be further developed for retinal disorders with a specific peptide.
Research in formulation of poorly watersoluble active compounds in PLGA Nanoparticles using spray-drying technology. University of Antwerp
The poor water-solubility of new active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) is a true challenge for formulation experts. Before an API can reach the systemic circulation and reach the target site of action, orally-taken drugs need to dissolve first in the gastrointestinal fluids. The use of organic solvents in high-throughput screening of new API's, as well as the structure-activity related research, often results in candidate-molecules with an ...
Formulation and processing of probiotic bacteria in a solid oral dosage form for pharyngeal delivery. University of Antwerp
Environmental Ecology & Applied Microbiology (ENdEMIC), Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy
Respiratory infections know a high morbidity. Nowadays, patients are treated with over-thecounter products such as decongestives and expectorants. There is also an overuse of antibiotics, which leads to antibiotic resistance. Therefore, a new therapy, based on microbiomemanipulation, is imposed. This research will focus on the improvements for this new therapeutic strategy. The human body consists of many microorganisms lives in symbiosis with ...
Research in Formulation and Processing of Probiotics in Buccal Dosage Forms. University of Antwerp
Environmental Ecology & Applied Microbiology (ENdEMIC), Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy
In case of many nasopharyngeal diseases, such as otitis media, acute and chronic sinusitis and pharyngitis, patients frequently resort to self-medication using over-the-counter products. Often, clinical data is lacking to support the use of decongestive, expectorantia or nasal salt solutions and relapse is frequent. On the other hand, (ab)use of antibiotics is linked with the resistance-issue. Main idea of this project is that local buccal or ...
OPTIMISE: Advanced biOreactors and Processing equipmenT for culturIng beneficial MIcrobeS to higher yiElds. University of Antwerp
Geobiology, Ecosystem Management, Sustainable Energy, Air and Water Technology (DuEL), Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, Environmental Ecology & Applied Microbiology (ENdEMIC)
Beneficial microbes have a plethora of biomedical, environmental and engineering applications. Currently, many fundamental and more applied R&D projects are slowed down by the need for advanced equipment for the upscaling and processing of the microbial cultures. Here, a research consortium of bio-engineers, civil engineers, biologists and pharmaceutical engineers was built to jointlyadvance the applications and research of beneficial ...
Versatile X-ray powder diffraction platform for materials science. University of Antwerp
Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, Laboratory of adsorption and catalysis (LADCA), Intelligence in PRocesses, Advanced Catalysts and Solvents (iPRACS)
The proposal concerns versatile instrumentation for determining crystallinity, unit cell size and structure of organic, metal-organic and inorganic materials. Several groups at UAntwerp have a pressing need for fast, reliable, X-ray diffraction data, at low angles to determine large unit cells, and preferably in 2D to determine sample homogeneity. The envisaged machine has a Cu K alpha source, horizontal sample platform (Bragg-Brentano ...
Drug delivery systems and in vivo efficacy of the serine protease inhibitor UAMC-00050 in a preclinical model for irritable bowel syndrome. University of Antwerp
Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, Medicinal Chemistry (UAMC), Laboratory Experimental Medicine and Pediatrics (LEMP)
The serine protease inhibitor UAMC-00050, previously shown efficacious in 2 preclinical IBS models after systemic administration, will be formulated for oral and rectal administration. The drug delivery systems will be tested in the rat IBS model for dose determination, efficacy, time of administration and serum concentrations, a crucial step towards further valorization of the compound.
