Dune toe dynamics along the urbanised macro-tidal coast of Belgium Ghent University KU Leuven
The dynamics of the dune toe along the urbanised 65 km macro-tidal coast of Belgium has been examined based on (bi-)annual cross-shore profiles derived from airborne LiDAR surveys conducted between 2000 and 2019. Results indicate that the average dune toe level is located at +5.9 m Tweede Algemene Waterpassing (TAW, Belgian Ordnance Datum), which is 1 m lower than the conventional dune toe level. However, this level is not static but rather ...
Monitoring surface water area changes in the Aral Sea Basin using the Google Earth Engine cloud platform Ghent University Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The surface water area and types in the Aral Sea Basin (ASB) have undergone extensive changes due to the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities. This study explores the changes in the surface water area in the ASB based on the Google Earth Engine cloud platform. Then, we integrate multi-source data to identify 1559 lakes and 196 reservoirs from the Joint Research Centre Global Surface Water (JRC GSW) dataset. Our results indicate ...
Machine learning-based prediction of sand and dust storm sources in arid Central Asia Ghent University Vrije Universiteit Brussel
With the emergence of multisource data and the development of cloud computing platforms, accurate prediction of event-scale dust source regions based on machine learning (ML) methods should be considered, especially accounting for the temporal variability in sample and predictor variables. Arid Central Asia (ACA) is recognized as one of the world's primary potential sand and dust storm (SDS) sources. In this study, based on the Google Earth ...
Sensitivities in wind driven spectral wave modelling for the Belgian coast Ghent University
This paper presents the analysis of spectral wind-wave modelling (using SWAN) of the North Sea focusing on the modelled wave parameters along the Belgian coast. Two wind databases were used to drive the model: ECMWF-ERA5 reanalysis and the Dutch Offshore Wind Atlas. The models were calibrated with measured data at various stations along the Belgian coastline. The accuracy in terms of wave parameter statistics was compared for the calibrated and ...
Assessment of three long-term satellite-based precipitation estimates against ground observations for drought characterization in northwestern China Ghent University
Long-term satellite-based precipitation estimates (LSPE) play a significant role in climatological studies like drought monitoring. In this study, three popular LSPEs (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR), Rainfall Estimates from Rain Gauge and Satellite Observations (CHIRPS) and Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP)) were evaluated on a ...
Linking the cognitive load induced by route instruction types and building configuration during indoor route guidance, a usability study in VR Ghent University
Every route instruction type (e.g. map, symbol, photo) induces a specific cognitive load. However, when these types are used at different decision points in a building, the building configuration of these points also influences the induced cognitive load. Therefore, the process of route guidance results in an interaction between the instruction type and the decision point, which determines the induced cognitive load. One way of reducing ...
Taking a closer look at indoor route guidance : usability study to compare an adapted and non-adapted mobile prototype Ghent University
As indoor wayfinding can be very challenging, adapted systems, which adapt the route instruction type, are being developed to facilitate more supportive indoor route guidance. In this study, such a system has been developed based on the results of an online survey. This adapted system was compared with a non-adapted system by use of eye tracking, position tracking, an orientation test and a questionnaire. The results revealed that using symbols ...
The summer cooling effect under the projected restoration of Aral Sea in Central Asia Ghent University
The Aral Sea once covered 68 x 103 km(2), but lost 90% of its area during the last decades due to unreasonable water resources utilization. Fortunately, some measures to save the Aral Sea have been proposed. Regional climate model ALARO-SURFEX was applied in dynamic downscaling simulations to quantify the climatic effects generated by increasing greenhousegas (GHG) emissions and the Aral Sea restoration. The results show that performance of ...
