Autonomous and Active Transport Operated by an Entropic DNA Piston. KU Leuven
We present a synthetic nanoscale piston that uses chemical energy to perform molecular transport against an applied bias. Such a device comprises a 13 by 5 nm protein cylinder, embedded in a biological membrane enclosing a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) rod. Hybridization with DNA cargo rigidifies the rod, allowing for transport of a selected DNA molecule across the nanopore. A strand displacement reaction from ssDNA fuel on the other side of the ...
Generation of Tailored Terahertz Waves from Monolithic Integrated Metamaterials onto Spintronic Terahertz Emitters KU Leuven
Recently emerging spintronic terahertz (THz) emitters, featuring many appreciable merits such as low-cost, high efficiency, ultrabroadband, and ease of integration, offer multifaceted capabilities not only in understanding the fundamental ultrafast magnetism physics but also for exploring multifarious practical applications. Integration of various flexible and tunable functions at the source such as polarization manipulation, amplitude ...
Uncertainty evaluation and reduction in three-probe roundness profile measurement based on the system transfer function KU Leuven
The three-probe method for separating the spindle rotation error and the specimen form error is extensively described in the literature. An attractive feature is its application in in-process measurement. However, the resulting uncertainty is studied far less extensively. In this paper, an evaluation and propagation method for the uncertainty, as well as for an uncertainty reduction, is given based on the system transfer function (S-function). ...
Time-Domain Finite-Element Eddy-Current Homogenization of Windings using Foster Networks and Recursive Convolution KU Leuven
In this paper, we propose an alternative time-domain approach for the homogenization of multiturn windings with frequencydependent parameters in finite-element (FE) models. First, an elementary 2-D FE characterization of the conductors is carried out over the frequency range of interest to obtain the frequency-dependent parameters and account for the eddy-current effects in the winding. These complex coefficients are subsequently associated to ...
Semixup: In- and out-of-manifold regularization for deep semi-supervised knee osteoarthritis severity grading from plain radiographs KU Leuven
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the highest disability factors in the world. This musculoskeletal disorder is assessed from clinical symptoms, and typically confirmed via radiographic assessment. This visual assessment done by a radiologist requires experience, and suffers from moderate to high inter-observer variability. The recent literature has shown that deep learning methods can reliably perform the OA severity assessment according to ...
