Dietary exposure to multi-mycotoxins as a predisposing factor for oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma in Malawi Ghent University
Malawi has the highest age-standardized rate of oesophageal carcinoma (ESCC), and relies on maize as staple food. Common mycotoxins in maize - fumonisins and aflatoxins- have been linked with an increased risk of ESCC in areas of intensive maize farming. This study aims at measuring the extent of mycotoxins in maize, and establishing associations between exposure and risk of ESCC-development.
Forwarding precision oncology by integrating cohort-derived molecular and clinical information. Ghent University
Combining molecular data and clinical annotation of tumor cohorts, now available in a public, but increasingly also in a clinical context has the potential to greatly advance clinical practice. However, the integration of these data is non-trivial. Therefore, we will develop methods to analyze such cohort-derived molecular and clinical information and apply them in the context of drug-based precision oncology.
Organic synthesis is a powerful method to interrogate biological processes, complementing genetics studies. In this project, innovative synthetic strategies will be developed that can find utility in biology research. Development of multiplexed plasma reactor for wastewater treatment Ghent University
The project is based on improving the energy efficiency of wastewater treatment process by developing a non-thermal plasma reactor, capable of producing and dosing reactive species in situ in wastewater for the removal of pollutants. Utilization of non-thermal plasma reactors require significantly less energy as compared to conventional one for wastewater treatment.
