Curiosity in the works of Alexandre Dumas Ghent University
This project examines the role of curiosity and its literary representation in Alexandre Dumas’ oeuvre. My aim is twofold: (1) to expand Blumenberg’s inquiry on curiosity into the French nineteenth century. This will allow me (2) to show how Dumas’ quest and his work epitomise the ravishing uncertainty and unrest of his era.
Unravelling the pyrolysis chemistry of sulphur, nitrogen and oxygen containing hydrocarbon mixtures Ghent University
In the European chemical industry, there is a strong drive to shift to renewable and alternative
feedstocks in the pursuit of sustainability and increased profitability. However, these feeds contain
heteroatomic compounds that are not typically present in classical fossil feedstocks and create a
big concern even when they are just considered as drop in alternative. Specifically for steam
...Land use changes and water balance in the Mt. Guna shield volcano (Ethiopian plateau) since the 1930s Ghent University
Mt. Guna is a Miocene shield volcano on the Ethiopian plateau. The surface waters are drained radially, and through deep percolation feed a number of springs at the interface between the volcanic tuffs of Mt. Guna and the underlying Ashangi basalt. This study makes a reconstruction of hydro (geo) logical and geomorphological changes, and allows to predict future scenarios on similar Miocene volcanoes in the Highlands.
The EU’s approach to tackling illegal logging in third countries: A comprehensive and political science analysis of the Voluntary Partnership Agreements Ghent University
The EU’s Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) with timber-producing countries ensure EU market access for verified legal timber products in return for forest governance reforms. This PhD will for the first time systematically (a) map and (b) explain the considerable amount of variation between the 15 VPAs, as well as (c) assess their impact in timber-producing countries through six work packages.
Privacy preserving data and knowledge fusion in personalized biomedicine KU Leuven
In our research we will investigate privacy preserving data and knowledge fusion methods in personalized medicine, and specifically privacy preservation at both levels: at the level of a single data set containing potentially sensitive, personal samples and in a multi-centric context with distributed, privately owned data sets.

Predictive Cross-layer Control of a High-throughput Wireless Link for connecting a 720 Degree Camera on a Drone KU Leuven
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are becoming more common and important in everyday life. Recently, Morgan Stanley released a forecast stating that by 2050, the total market of Urban Air Mobility, including drone delivery, air taxi, and patrolling drones, etc., will reach up to 11% of the projected global Gross Domestic Product. Ensuring the expected safety, security, operation transparency, and airspace usage efficiency of such a large fleet ...
Smart plastic waste conversion for a circular economy Ghent University
The world is trying to make the transition to a stronger and more circular economy. Plastic waste is a particular concern because "closing the loop" through mechanical recycling and re-use is only feasible to a limited extend. This makes that thermal or catalytic chemical recycling, the topic of
this project, will become one of the dominant technologies in the coming decade. However, the limited understanding of how and what can be ...
TGC_FAST: The effectiveness of algorithm-guided tight blood glucose control within normal fasting ranges with insulin in adult critically ill patients. KU Leuven
The goal is to lead to worldwide safe, scientifically based and cost-effective care for critically ill patients by resolving the ongoing controversy regarding two treatment strategies used.
