Title Participants Abstract "Online Language Teaching: Teacher Perceptions of Effective Communication Tools, Required Skills and Challenges of Online Teaching" "Liesbeth De Paepe, Chang Zhu" "To date, teacher perceptions of online language teaching have attracted very little attention. However, these perceptions may influence decisions regarding instructional design, teaching practices and eventually the learning experience. Furthermore, teacher perceptions can contribute to the design of teacher training programs. This study provides teacher perceptions regarding i) effective communication tools for teaching online second language classes; ii) required teacher & instructional designer skills and iii) challenges of online teaching. Results include that student engagement and the facilitation of collaboration among students is perceived difficult, unlike the availability of user-friendly tools; that professional development is perceived necessary to acquire the indispensable technical and pedagogical skills; and that online teachers need to make a shift towards an individualized, learner-centred teaching model." "SCREEN AND PENCIL, AN INTERTWINED COMBINATION FOR TEACHING: FIRST REFLECTIONS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONLINE TEACHING TOOL WITH SPECIALISED VIDEO-TUTORIALS (SKETCH ATLAS) ON THE TOPIC OF FREEHAND ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING" "Saidja HEYNICKX" "Screen and pencil, an intertwined combination for teaching: First reflections on the implementation of an online teaching tool with specialised video-tutorials (Sketch Atlas) on the topic of freehand architectural drawing. The skill of freehand drawing is essential for architects. The pencil is a basic tool to rapidly observe, to express first ideas and to communicate design problems. The interaction with the freehand drawing or sketch is – besides the computer - still a part of the daily practice of an architect. The haptic and direct quality of the sketch can be used in every phase of a project: with a client, in the office and on the construction site. Teaching this skill to students in architectural education programs is challenging. It requires a lot of guidance, a persistent methodology and a lot of practice. In contemporary programs of architecture the omnipresent computer consumes a lot of space and time. The investment in a one-on-one educational environment for hand drawing is often neglected or simply impossible due to the large groups of students. We developed a tool, Sketch Atlas, where the learning trajectory of freehand drawing is presented in a new way. By introducing high level video tutorials with step-by-step instructions, the whole trajectory from line to space is covered. The student can work at his or her own pace. The starting point of this project was that the very precise movement of a pencil in a hand is hard to communicate in a textbook. However, the project is not a replacement for the classroom or the textbook. The interlocking quality of the two teaching systems (the classic demonstration of a teacher on a black board and the video-tutorial platform) introduces a new and refreshing combination of learning methods. We will demonstrate that this blended system can structure and enrich the learning path of freehand drawing on different levels. The first version of the platform was used intensively during the lockdown period of 2020 at our Faculty. We will reflect on this ‘forced’ experiment. At the moment, a version 2.0 is ready for dissemination in an international context (in faculties of architecture and in architectural offices)." To be commercially interesting, these WSNs must be integrated with enterprise systems of various actors in the supply chain. The need for interoperability between networks and partners, the heterogeneity of WSN technologies being used, and the mobility of sensor nodes make this integration far from trivial. This paper presents lessons learned from a research project in collaboration with industry in which we developed a prototype middleware solution for container transport. The prototype triggered valuable feedback which is highly relevant to consider when designing middleware for realistic sensor applications." "Teaching in a shared classroom : unveiling the effective teaching behavior of beginning team teaching teams using a qualitative approach" "Dries Marien, Ruben Vanderlinde, Elke Struyf" "This study aims to gain insight into the experiences of beginning team teaching teams and the dimensions of effective teaching behavior that are perceived as clear added value in their pedagogical practices. Sixteen beginning team teaching teams from twelve different elementary schools participated in team interviews. The more complex dimensions of effective teaching behavior, based on the International Comparative Analysis of Learning and Teaching (ICALT) framework, such as adaptive teaching and activating learning, were perceived as clear added value in their team teaching practices. Meanwhile, the more basic teaching dimensions-including efficient classroom management, providing clear instruction, and creating a safe and stimulating learning climate-were reported to a lesser extent." The geographical structure and society in remote areas provide unique experiences. This study focuses on how teaching practice in remote areas opens up opportunities for transformative learning. Forty-one preservice primary teachers from three universities participated in semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted in retrospect after participants had finished their teaching practice. Results show that PSTs encountered nine types of challenges during teaching practice; parents’ low awareness of the importance of their children’s education, local teachers’ low motivation, limited teaching resources at school, pupils’ absenteeism, pupils’ poor numeracy and literacy skills, the principal’s low responsibility, natural hazard factors, pupils’ low ability to understand Indonesian, and local conflicts between different communities. Encountering these nine types of challenges fosters PSTs’ disorientation, which might lead to transformative learning. In conclusion, remote areas have potential for transformative learning." "Teach as you preach: the effects of student-centred versus lecture-based teaching on student teachers’ approaches to teaching." "Filip Dochy, Steven Janssens" "This study investigates the effects of teaching and learning environments on student teachers' approaches to teaching and compares a lecture-based setting to a student-activating teaching environment, in which self-discovery learning by means of authentic tasks is central. Data collection (N = 852) was obtained by a pre-test/post-test design including the Approaches to Teaching Inventory. Though student teachers' approaches changed significantly, the direction is only consistent with the assumption that the student-activating experiences push students towards conceptual change/student-focused approaches; however, not away from information transmission/teacher-focused teaching. In fact, students' approaches to teaching at the start of the experiment are important predictors of their scores after they followed the course on child development under both conditions. Moreover, student teachers' changes in approaches to teaching tend to be affected by variables such as performance, academic self-esteem, perceived workload and students' changes in approaches to learning: variables that operate in distinct ways for diverse categories of approaches and work differently in both settings. In addition, the willingness of students to teach in the way they have been taught is not as straightforward as might be expected. Although several students became convinced of the use of the teaching methods in the experiment for their own practice, the majority of students demonstrate reflective practices, make critical judgements, formulate terms or suggest amendments to the teaching methods before simply adopting them for their own future pupils."
