Title Promoter Affiliations Abstract "Scientific support for the development of the regional framework for the adoption of a binding social objective within the Flemish land and housing policy." "Sien Winters" "Research Group Social and Economic Policy and Social Inclusion, Research Centre of Economic History, Leuven" "The Flemish Decree Land and property aims at providing affordable housing. During the preparation of this decree, the researchers are asked to put their knowledge on housing and spatial planning at the disposal of the Flemish administration. The research contains three parts: 1. The formulation of proposals for methods and indicators that can be used to establish the social objectives at the level of municipalities. 2. The conduction of case studies to verify that these social objectives correspond with the planned spatial structures. 3. A contribution to the development of a monitoring system that allows measuring wether the social objectives are achieved." "Policy Research Centre 2012 Work and Social Economy - CELM." "Wim Herremans" "CELM - Centre of Expertise on Labour Market Monitoring" "The Centre of Expertise for Labour Market Monitoring (CELM) will consolidate the activities of the previous Data Development Unit. The main tasks are: collecting, cleaning and analyzing available labour market data for policy purposes, further developing the Flemish Labour Account and the strategic scoreboards on the Flemish labour market, projecting activity and employment rates, methodologically supporting the VLAMT project (Flemish Labour Market Research for the Future), monitoring the job market and benchmarking of the Flemish labour market performance in a European perspective. The CELM is also the hub for labour market information in Flanders, will further develop its interactive website and continue its journal Over.Werk. The CELM will operate in close collaboration with the Department Work and Social Economy of the Flemish government." "Development of a housing policy plan for the community Heist-op-den-Berg." "Sien Winters" "Research Group Social and Economic Policy and Social Inclusion" "The community Heist-op-den-Berg wishes to draw a housing policy plan. This is a policy document which shows the vision of the municipality on the several aspects of the local housing policy. It is the result of a planning process with the various local actors, that starting from the knowledge and analysis of the given situation in a number of steps defines priority policy options and a time bound action programme. The HIVA assists the municipality in compiling this plan." "Research Policy Centre for Housing, contribution of HIVA to short term research tasks." "Sien Winters" "Research Group Social and Economic Policy and Social Inclusion" "The Policy Research Centre for housing is a form of collaboration between the KU Leuven, the University College for Sciences and Arts, the PHL University College, the University of Antwerp and OTB Research Institute of the TUDelft (the Netherlands). Researchers from distinct scientific disciplines gather data concerning Flemish housing market and housing policy and carry out scientific analyses aiming at contributing to a long term vision on Flemish housing policy." "Exclusion from civic engagement of a diverse older population: Features, experiences, and policy implications (CIVEX)" "Sarah Dury" "Educational Science" "In Europe’s ageing societies, being able to age healthy and actively remains a major challenge not only for older people themselves but also for wider society. Moreover, older adults continue to be at risk of social exclusion in key life domains, including material and financial resources, social relations, access to services, community and neighbourhood integration, and civic and cultural participation. While socialexclusion in later life represents a major topic for research and policy in Europe and other world regions, significant gaps in knowledge and understanding persist, thereby reducing the potential for evidence-based policy development. A majorshortcoming concerns the lack of conceptual development and empirical evidence on older adults’ exclusion from multidimensional civic engagement. CIVEX aims to meet this gap by investigating features of exclusion from multidimensional civic engagement in later life and older adults’ experiences of such exclusion, and by identifying evidence-based policy responses to address it." UA provides KULeuven research results mentioned in the title of the project under the conditions as stipulated in this contract." "Layered Landscapes. Urban green space between policy and perception, Antwerp 1859-1973" "Inge Bertels" "Architectural Engineering" "In this PhD the evolution of urban green space in Antwerp is studied in the period 1859-1973. The twenty-first century is marked by an increased interest toward urban green space. Although it comes across as a recent preoccupation, the attention for urban green space originated in the second half of the nineteenth century. European societies were marked by industrialisation, urban growth and the densification of the urban environment, revealing the value of urban green space. As many different (f)actors e.g. local politicians, action groups, environmentalists, investors, architects and town-planners influenced the history of urban green space, my research consist of a three-dimensional study. First, it presents an analysis of the changing meanings and perception of urban green space from the perspective of local politicians; second, it reveals the frictions between the authorities and the users; and third, it nuances the prevailing focus on both official sources and official green spaces by emphasizing the importance of the alternative perception and use of urban green spaces." "Policy Research Centre on Sports 2012: sport and health among senior citizens in Flanders." "Christophe Delecluse" "Physical Activity, Sports & Health Research Group" "The study focusses on three objectives regarding sport, exercise and physical activity in older adults in Flanders:a.) to determine the long term impact of different exercise interventions b) to assess the degree of physical activity in elderly (70+) with special attention to the institutionalized elderly c) to design new exercise interventions for specific target group. Specific questions: a. The effect of two exercise interventions on older adults was determined in a large (N=270, 60-70yr) intervention study during the first policy research centre (2002-2006). Short term (1 yr) effects on sports participation, physical activity, physical fitness and mental wellbeing were analysed, however there is very little information about the long term effects of these interventions (5yr after the intervention). b. A big variation in physical activity has been found in the population, however the oldest age group is most at risk for inactivity. Thresholds for participation in exercise interventions must be determined. Specific exercise interventions taken into account specific needs of the target group should be determined. Therefore we will first determine physical activity patterns by means of objective and subjective methods. The physical activity patterns must be described with respect to age, fitness level, functionality and social environment. In this way specific needs and thresholds can be determined and specific exercise interventions can be designed." "The social state of Flanders 2009: general contribution 'Housing in Flanders'." "Sien Winters" "Research Group Social and Economic Policy and Social Inclusion" "How is it to live in Flanders? And how this has been evolving during the last 20 to 30 years? To answer these questions, we start from the four main objectives of Flemish housing policy: the availability of houses, the quality of the houses and their surroundings, the affordability of housing and the security to be able to stay living in these houses. Based on facts and figures we describe the current situation and the evolutions. We also search for explanations behind these evolutions, which we find as well in the functioning of the housing market as in the way housing policy in Belgium and Flanders has been reacting to this during more than a century."
