Title Participants Abstract "Effects of dry cow treatment of beef cows on pathogenic organisms, milk somatic cell counts, and calf growth during the subsequent lactation" "CA Lents, RP Wettemann, Max Paape, ML Looper, DS Buchanan" "Spring calving Angus and Angus x Hereford multiparous cows were utilized to determine the effects of intramammary treatment with penicillin G procaine (200,000 IU) and novobiocin (400 mg) at the time of weaning on udder health and calf growth after the subsequent calving. Cows were stratified by age and breed and assigned randomly to receive intramammary treatment (n = 99) at weaning or as untreated controls (n = 97). Quarter milk samples were collected at weaning and at 8 to 14 d after calving. Milk samples were analyzed for somatic cell counts (SCC) and mastitis-causing bacteria. Dry cow treatment decreased (P = 0.005) the number of cows infected after calving. Treatment decreased (P = 0.04) the number of cows that developed new infections and reduced (P = 0.03) the number of quarters with mastitis-causing bacteria after calving that were infected at weaning. Somatic cell counts after calving were greatest (P = 0.008) for cows infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Treatment did not alter (P = 0.19) SCC of quarters after calving that were infected with S. aureus at weaning but reduced (P = 0.002) SCC after calving of quarters that were infected with coagulase-negative staphylococci at weaning. Body weight of calves during early lactation was increased (P = 0.006) if cows with intramammary infection were treated at weaning. Treatment of noninfected cows at weaning increased (P = 0.008) adjusted 205-d weaning weights of calves after the subsequent lactation when compared with untreated noninfected cows. We conclude that treatment of beef cows at weaning with intramammary antibiotics decreased intramammary infections after calving, improved udder health during the subsequent lactation, and increased BW gain of the calves." For each experiment, eight loins (M. longissimus thoracis et lumborum) from four animals (left and right side) were assigned to one of the two treatments (n = 4). Results showed no further tenderization after three weeks of aging, whereas metmyoglobin formation and lipid oxidation increased until nine weeks of aging (P < 0.05). During the nine weeks of aging, atypical flavor, odor and flavor intensity was affected (P < 0.05). This was accompanied by an increase of small peptides and other nitrogenous compounds. In each company, the temperature and relative humidity of the ripening chamber were measured, and two loins (each in a different stage of the ripening process) were sampled. From the surface of each loin, a lean meat and adipose tissue sample was analysed separately, and different groups of bacteria, yeasts and moulds were enumerated. The average relative humidity in the ripening chambers was 72 ± 13% and the temperature ranged between 0.0 °C and 5.9 °C. During the drying process, most of the lean meat and adipose tissue samples showed high numbers of total psychrotrophic aerobic bacteria, Pseudomonas spp., psychrotrophic lactic acid bacteria, and yeasts, but the variation between loins was high. The microbiological load on freshly cut dry-aged steaks was generally lower than on loin surfaces, but both psychrotrophic aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were present inside several steaks. The water activity inside dry-aged beef steaks was high (a w ≥ 0.98), which could allow growth of psychrotrophic pathogens, though more in-depth studies are necessary to determine potential growth during the storage of (trimmed) steaks or even inside loins during the dry-aging process." "Colostrum quality in Belgian blue beef cattle and its association with helminth infections" "B Werbrouck, Marcel Van Aert, Johannes Charlier" "This article describes the assessment of immunoglobuline (Ig) G concentration in the colostrum of Belgian blue beef cows and an investigation of its association with serological status against helminth infections (i.e. Ostertagia ostertagi and Fasciola hepatica). In the discussion, we go more deeply into cow-related factors and environmental factors that are known to influence the bovine colostrum quality. Colostral Ig G concentrations were measured in 103 cows and showed great variation: the majority of the colostra studied had a low ( 50 mg/ml). This variation was not significantly related to the serological status against helminth infections. Factors with known influence on bovine colostrum quality can be divided into cow-related factors (age, genetics, disease), seasonal factors, climate factors and management factors (lactation and dry-off management, feed, temperature and administration of hormones and vaccines). Knowledge of these factors can be used to improve colostrum management in cattle farms." "Microbiological safety of aged meat." "Lieve Herman" "The impact of dry-ageing of beef and wet-ageing of beef, pork and lamb on microbiological hazards and spoilage bacteria was examined and current practices are described. As ‘standard fresh’ and wet-aged meat use similar processes these were differentiated based on duration. In addition to a description of the different stages, data were collated on key parameters (time, temperature, pH and aw) using a literature survey and questionnaires. The microbiological hazards that may be present in all aged meats included Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, enterotoxigenic Yersinia spp., Campylobacter spp. and Clostridium spp. Moulds, such as Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp., may produce mycotoxins when conditions are favourable but may be prevented by ensuring a meat surface temperature of −0.5 to 3.0°C, with a relative humidity (RH) of 75–85% and an airflow of 0.2–0.5 m/s for up to 35 days. The main meat spoilage bacteria include Pseudomonas spp., Lactobacillus spp. Enterococcus spp., Weissella spp., Brochothrix spp., Leuconostoc spp., Lactobacillus spp., Shewanella spp. and Clostridium spp. Under current practices, the ageing of meat may have an impact on the load of microbiological hazards and spoilage bacteria as compared to standard fresh meat preparation. Ageing under defined and controlled conditions can achieve the same or lower loads of microbiological hazards and spoilage bacteria than the variable log10 increases predicted during standard fresh meat preparation. An approach was used to establish the conditions of time and temperature that would achieve similar or lower levels of L. monocytogenes and Yersinia enterocolitica (pork only) and lactic acid bacteria (representing spoilage bacteria) as compared to standard fresh meat. Finally, additional control activities were identified that would further assure the microbial safety of dry-aged beef, based on recommended best practice and the outputs of the equivalence assessment." Supervision: Prof. Dr. Pol Ghesquière, Dr. Bart BoetsLearning to read is a complex task requiring the translation of written symbols, or graphemes, into speech forms, or phonemes. Given that the brain evolved to understand communicative messages conveyed by speech, the pre-existing neural circuitries for spoken language and object recognition have had to adapt to the explicit needs of reading. Reading acquisition is therefore less trivial than it looks. Even though the majority of children will master the reading skill fluently and well, about 5-10% of the population develops a specific reading impairment i.e. developmental dyslexia, which is a neurological disorder resulting in a failure to acquire reading and spelling skills despite adequate intelligence, instruction and remedial efforts. Similarly to the sighted population, a proportion of blind children have specific difficulties related to reading braille, which cannot be easily explained. Very few studies have been conducted to investigate the cognitive and perceptual abilities which are relevant for fluent braille reading and which might be affected in the case of braille reading difficulties. Since braille and print are linguistically identical, the findings from print reading research can be used for testing hypothesis about reading braille. Hence in our research, being inspired by the concepts of the phonological and the temporal processing deficit theories of developmental dyslexia, we have combined auditory, speech and phonological processing as well as tactile spatial resolution measures to gain an understanding of how these perceptual and cognitive processes interact in support of reading braille as opposed to reading print.The participants of the current project were blind braille readers from Belgium (n=12), the Netherlands (n=16) and Estonia (n=12). Thirty-three of the included braille readers were blind from birth, while 7 had lost their vision before the age of 10. Twenty one braille readers are able to perceive light, whereas nineteen have no remaining rest vision. Based on age, sex, nationality and educational level a matched control group of sighted print readers was composed. All participating braille and print readers had normal intelligence as well as hearing and they spoke Dutch and Estonian as their first language respectively. In order to observe possible developmental patterns, the Dutch speaking participants were also divided into groups based on age: a group of young readers (younger than 16 years of age) and a group of adult readers (older than 16 years of age).Differently from visual processing, which enables simultaneous and parallel perception of text, the tactile modality offers a successive input and imposes a sequential nature of reading. Since fingers must necessarily pass over all the characters on a line, braille reading is believed to mirror the grapho-phonological reading strategy (character-by-character) which is prominent in young and inexperienced print readers. While sighted readers apply a direct orthographic route to read frequent or irregular words and the indirect grapho-phonological route to decode infrequent and unfamiliar words or nonwords, braille readers, we hypothesized, should use the same grapho-phonological route indiscriminately. Therefore, we administered word reading, pseudoword reading and story reading tests, measuring accuracy and speed of reading in all conditions. If blind readers are inclined to constant decoding, an effective engagement of various phonological processing skills should be required throughout the reading process. In order to assess these phonological processing abilities we administered phonological awareness tests (phoneme deletion and spoonerism), verbal short term memory tests (digit span and nonword repetition) and tests measuring lexical retrieval speed, i.e. rapid automatic naming (RAN digits and RAN letters). Auditory temporal processing has been suggested to have a crucial impact on the development of adequate phonological representations through speech perception. Thus far, no studies have investigated the relation between auditory processing and braille reading. Considering the postulated association between auditory processing, speech perception and the quality of phonological representations and given the hypothetical role of phonological processing in braille reading, we administered both auditory temporal processing as well as speech perception tasks. Auditory temporal processing was assessed with a frequency modulation detection test and speech perception was measured by the words-in-noise and sentences-in-noise perception tests. A specific aspect pertaining to braille reading is tactile spatial acuity, which plays an essential part in the correct identification of the relative spatial position of the dots in braille characters. In order to measure tactile spatial acuity in the current study, a grating orientation task was administered.The results revealed that the sequential nature of braille does impose constant decoding and effective recruitment of phonological skills throughout the reading process. In addition to the significant item length effect (i.e. reading times increase with the number of constituent syllables of the word) on both word and pseudoword reading speed, phonological awareness and verbal short-term memory correlated substantially with all the reading accuracy measures in both Dutch and Estonian groups of braille readers. In the group of print readers, on the other hand item length effect was only observable on pseudoword reading measures, which in turn also correlated with phonological awareness. Hence, it can be suggested that sighted print readers switch between the use of grapho-phonological and orthographic processing modes depending on the familiarity, length and structure of the words. While braille readers performed equally well as print readers on speech perception tests, they did present slightly better thresholds (though non-significant) on the auditory frequency modulation detection task. Furthermore, both frequency modulation detection and speech perception not only correlated with phonological processing measures in the group of braille readers, but also related directly to braille reading performance. In the group of print readers, conversely, no direct associations between reading performance and auditory as well as speech processing were observed. Tactile spatial acuity correlated significantly with both braille reading accuracy as well as speed. To conclude, it can be suggested that highly developed phonological awareness and verbal short-term memory skills, corroborated by auditory processing and speech perception aptitude, together with adequate tactile spatial acuity determine the level of braille reading achievement." "Exploring effects of climate change on soil organic matter dynamics at the soil profile scale" "Jeroen Gillabel" "Sinds het begin van het Industriële tijdperk in de 18de eeuw is de CO2-c oncentratie in de atmosfeer gestegen van 280 ppm tot 388 ppm, wat een to ename met bijna 40% betekent. Het versterkte broeikaseffect is voor 70% toe te wijzen aan deze antropogene stijging van het CO2 gehalte, met als gevolg een verandering van het klimaat. Deze klimaatverandering uit zic h in een stijging van de temperatuur en van het zeeniveau, in de verande ring van neerslagpatronen en in een toegenomen frequentie van extreme dr oogte of overstromingen. Jaarlijks wordt ongeveer 60 Gt koolstof (C) uit gewisseld tussen de atmosfeer en terrestrische ecosystemen. Deze stroom wordt aangedreven door de natuurlijke cyclus van fotosynthese en microbi ële afbraak van organische stof in de bodem. De balans tussen deze twee processen wordt beïnvloed door het klimaat. Zowel de snelheid van fotosy nthese, dat voor de aanvoer van C naar de bodem zorgt, als van microbiël e afbraak van bodem organische stof (BOS), dat C terug omzet in CO2, nem en toe met de temperatuur. BOS afbraak stijgt over het algemeen echter s neller met de temperatuur dan fotosynthese, wat ervoor zorgt dat klimaat verandering een netto toename van CO2 in de atmosfeer tot gevolg heeft. Men is het echter niet eens over de grootte van deze positieve terugkopp eling tussen klimaat en de terrestrische C cyclus. Dit is voornamelijk t e wijten aan een gebrek aan kennis over de talrijke interagerende proces sen die de BOS afbraak beïnvloeden. Hierdoor worden het kwantificeren en voorspellen van het effect van klimaatverandering op BOS afbraak tot op heden sterk bemoeilijkt. Bovendien is onze kennis over BOS dynamiek bep erkt tot de bovenste laag van het bodemprofiel, terwijl meer dan 60% van de BOS zich dieper dan 20 cm bevindt. Het hoofddoel van deze studie was om de processen te begrijpen die BOS a fbraak en de temperatuursgevoeligheid ervan bepalen doorheen een bodempr ofiel. Meer specifiek werd er onderzocht welke invloed BOS kwaliteit, BO S beschermingsmechanismen, O2 en CO2 concentraties, en het bodemvochtgeh alte hebben op BOS afbraak in verschillende horizonten van bodemprofiele n onder landbouw. Verder werden de interacties tussen de sturende factor en die de temperatuursgevoeligheid van BOS bepalen onderzocht op labo-sc haal en op veldschaal. Aangezien BOS afbraak in essentie een microbieel proces is, werd in een eerste deel van dit werk bepaald hoe de grootte en samenstelling van de microbiële biomassa verandert met de diepte in een landbouwbodem. De gro otte van de biomassa nam af met 85% over een diepte van 1 m, terwijl de samenstelling van microbiële gemeenschappen sterk wijzigde. Microbiële g emeenschappen in de toplaag vertoonden een groot aandeel Gram-negatieve bacteriën, terwijl microbiële gemeenschappen in de diepste horizont gedo mineerd werden door Gram-positieve bacteriën en actinomyceten. Uit dit e erste deel kon besloten worden dat microbiële biomassa in diepere bodeml agen beïnvloed wordt door beperkingen in makkelijk afbreekbare C bronnen . Bovendien stelden we vast dat de extractie-efficiëntie van microbiële biomassa afnam met de diepte. Dit maakt het noodzakelijk om de chlorofor m fumigatie methode een veelgebruikte methode om de biomassa grootte te bepalen voor elke bodem te calibreren, omdat anders de grootte van de biomassa i n diepere bodemlagen gevoelig wordt onderschat. In een tweede deel werd de hypothese onderzocht dat temperatuursgevoelig heid van BOS afbraak stijgt naarmate de BOS substraatkwaliteit daalt, en dat BOS beschermingsmechanismen de temperatuursgevoeligheid doen afneme n. Om experimenteel bewijs te vinden voor deze theorie, vergeleken we de temperatuursrespons (incubatie op 25°C en op 35°C) van BOS afbraak met deze van toegevoegd 13C gemerkt plantenmateriaal in top- en diepere lage n van een bodem. De temperatuursrespons werd gekwantificeerd aan de hand van Q10 waarden, die de proportionele verandering in respiratiesnelheid aangeven voor een 10°C temperatuursstijging. Deze Q10 waarden werden be paald voor verschillende fracties gerespireerde BOS die gekenmerkt werde n door dalende substraatkwaliteit. BOS in de diepe bodemlaag werd gekenm erkt door een hoge mate van BOS bescherming, en vertoonde een algemeen l agere temperatuursgevoeligheid dan BOS afkomstig uit de toplaag. Bovendi en nam de Q10 toe met dalende substraatkwaliteit in de toplaag (van 1.9 tot 3.8), terwijl geen effect van substraatkwaliteit op Q10 werd waargen omen in de diepe laag (Q10 tussen 1.0 en 1.3). De temperatuursrespons va n het onbeschermde plantenmateriaal vertoonde echter een gelijkaardig ve rloop in beide bodemlagen (stijging van 1.5 tot 2.5 in de toplaag en tot 4.5 in de diepe laag, geen significante verschillen tussen beide lagen) . Deze resultaten duiden er op dat BOS bescherming de temperatuursgevoel igheid van BOS afbraak inderdaad sterk kan verlagen. In een volgende sta p werd de temperatuursrespons van BOS in verschillende bodems en bodemdi eptes vergeleken met de relatieve bijdrage van verschillende BOS bescher mingsmechanismen tot de totale BOS opslag. De temperatuursrespons werd o pnieuw bepaald voor verschillende fracties gerespireerde BOS gekenmerkt door dalende substraatkwaliteit. De BOS opslag in fracties gekenmerkt do or fysische of chemische beschermingsmechanismen werd bepaald aan de han d van een fractionatieschema. De resultaten van dit experiment verschaft en meer duidelijkheid over de manier waarop BOS bescherming de temperatu ursgevoeligheid beïnvloedt. Er werd vastgesteld dat de temperatuursgevoe ligheid in bodems met relevante hoeveelheden onbeschermde BOS bepaald wo rdt door BOS substraatkwaliteit. In bodems waar chemische bescherming va n BOS in de leem en klei fracties dominant is, wordt de temperatuursgevo eligheid dan weer bepaald door BOS bescherming, waardoor de temperatuurs respons in deze bodems veel lager is. We speculeren dat dit te wijten is aan de lage Q10 van desorptie, de snelheidsbepalende stap voor BOS afbr aak in de diepere bodemlagen, waar geen onbeschermde BOS beschikbaar is. De O2-concentratie in de bodemlucht daalt met de diepte, terwijl de CO2- concentratie net veel hoger ligt in diepere bodemlagen vergeleken met de toplaag. Er is echter nog maar weinig geweten of en hoe deze veranderin gen in samenstelling van de bodemlucht een invloed hebben op BOS afbraak in diepere lagen. Experimenten waarbij de O2-concentratie verlaagd werd tot 15 vol% wezen uit dat de BOS afbraaksnelheid met 30% daalt, en dit zowel voor de toplaag als voor een diepe bodemlaag van een landbouwbodem . BOS afbraak herstelde na terugbrengen van het O2 niveau naar 21 vol%, wat erop wijst dat de totale microbiële activiteit vertraagd werd door h et verlaagde zuurstofgehalte. Analyse van fosfolipide vetzuren (PLFA) to onde aan dat de structuur van de microbiële gemeenschappen wijzigde ten gevolge van het lagere zuurstofgehalte. Het effect van hogere CO2-concen traties (1 vol% en 3 vol%) op de BOS afbraaksnelheid was groot in de top laag (daling met 50%), terwijl er in de diepere bodemlaag geen negatief effect op afbraaksnelheid werd vastgesteld. Na terugbrengen van het CO2 niveau op 500 ppm bleef de afbraaksnelheid lager dan in de controle bode m. Anderzijds toonde PLFA analyse aan dat de microbiële gemeenschapsstru ctuur op gelijkaardige manier veranderde onder hogere CO2 concentraties in beide bodemlagen. De wijzigingen waren echter relatief klein in verge lijking met de algemene verschillen in gemeenschapsstructuur tussen de b odemdieptes. Uit deze experimenten kon besloten worden dat het negatieve effect van CO2 op BOS afbraak in diepere bodemlagen wellicht wordt bepe rkt door de lage substraatbeschikbaarheid, of dat respiratie in diepe bo demlagen is aangepast aan de hogere CO2 concentraties die er heersen. To t slot werd ook gevonden dat O2 en CO2 concentraties slechts een beperkt e invloed hadden op de temperatuursgevoeligheid van BOS afbraak voor de onderzochte omstandigheden. In het laatste deel van deze studie bepaalden we BOS afbraak en temperat uursgevoeligheid ervan op verschillende dieptes in een bodemprofiel in e en Mediterraan klimaat. Zo konden we nagaan of het effect van de eerder onderzochte factoren beïnvloed werd door veranderingen in het bodemvocht gehalte. BOS afbraak in de toplaag van het profiel werd grotendeels bepa ald door het vochtgehalte, terwijl in diepere bodemlagen temperatuur de belangrijkste sturende factor was in het bepalen van de BOS afbraaksnelh eid. Ten gevolge van vochtlimitaties in de toplaag tijdens de droge, war me zomer, droegen de diepere bodemlagen tot 90% bij van de totale CO2 ef flux uit de bodem. Na het in rekening brengen van bodemvochtgehalte, kon den we dezelfde veranderingen in temperatuursgevoeligheid van BOS afbraa k met de diepte vaststellen als eerder onder gecontroleerde condities in het laboratorium, namelijk dat de temperatuursgevoeligheid afneemt met de diepte ten gevolge van BOS bescherming. Bovendien nam de temperatuurs gevoeligheid van BOS afbraak in het veld af met dalend vochtgehalte, wat wellicht verklaard kan worden door de lage Q10 van substraatdiffusie in water, de snelheidsbepalende stap voor BOS afbraak in droge omstandighe den. Deze resultaten bevestigen dat de kennis over controlerende factore n van temperatuursgevoeligheid bekomen in laboratorium studies ook relev ant is voor veldsituaties, tenminste als de invloed van omgevingsfactore n zoals vochtgehalte in rekening wordt gebracht. De verzamelde kennis over de sturende factoren van BOS afbraak en temper atuursgevoeligheid doorheen het bodemprofiel laat toe om te evalueren on der welke omstandigheden diepere bodemlagen een belangrijke rol spelen i n het bepalen van het verlies aan BOS ten gevolge van klimaatverandering . Gelet op de invloed van BOS eigenschappen, kunnen we besluiten dat bod ems met veel onbeschermde organische stof, zoals bodems in polaire gebie den, veenbodems of niet langer bevroren permafrost, het gevoeligst zijn voor temperatuursstijgingen. In deze bodems is BOS kwaliteit immers de b elangrijkste controlerende factor. Ook diepere bodemlagen van graslanden met diepwortelende soorten of tropische bossen, waar significante hoeve elheden verse C in diepere lagen terechtkomen, kunnen potentiële hotspot s zijn wat betreft het effect van temperatuur op BOS afbraak. Diepere bo demlagen waar BOS bescherming de meest belangrijke controlerende factor is zullen wellicht het minst beïnvloed worden door een temperatuurstijgi ng, vermits BOS bescherming de temperatuursrespons verlaagt. Voorbeelden van zulke bodems zijn Luvisols, Podzols of landbouwbodems arm aan BOS. Naast de invloed van BOS eigenschappen moet echter ook de invloed van om gevingsfactoren zoals vochtgehalte in rekening gebracht worden. Zelfs di epere bodemlagen met goed beschermde BOS kunnen belangrijk zijn in het b epalen van de totale CO2 flux uit de bodem als BOS afbraak in de toplaag gelimiteerd wordt door droogte. Tot slot kunnen we besluiten dat de kennis verzameld in deze studie bela ngrijke implicaties heeft voor de verdere ontwikkeling van BOS modellen die in staat moeten zijn om de invloed van klimaatswijzigingen correct t e simuleren over het ganse bodemprofiel. De huidige modellen zijn gebase erd op BOS pools die verschillen in stabiliteit. De resultaten van deze studie wijzen er echter op dat temperatuursgevoeligheid van een BOS pool niet direct afhankelijk is van zijn stabiliteit, maar eerder van de mec hanismen die aan de basis liggen van de stabiliteit. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration in whole blood measured at birth has been proposed as an indicator of maternal iodine status during the last trimester of pregnancy. It has been shown that mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy may affect the neurodevelopment of the offspring. In several studies, elevated TSH levels at birth were associated with suboptimal cognitive and psychomotor outcomes among young children. This paper describes the protocol of the PSYCHOTSH study aiming to assess the association between neonatal TSH levels and intellectual, psychomotor and psychosocial development of 4–5 year old children. The results could lead to a reassessment of the recommended cut-off levels of 5 > mU/L used for monitoring iodine status of the population. Methods In total, 380 Belgian 4–5 year old preschool children from Brussels and Wallonia with a neonatal blood spot TSH concentration between 0 and 15 mU/L are included in the study. For each sex and TSH-interval (0–1, 1–2, 2–3, 3–4, 4–5, 5–6, 6–7, 7–8, 8–9 and 9–15 mU/L), 19 newborns were randomly selected from all newborns screened by the neonatal screening centre in Brussels in 2008–2009. Infants with congenital hypothyroidism, low birth weight and prematurity were excluded from the study. Neonatal TSH concentration was measured by the Autodelphia method in dried blood spots, collected by heel stick on filter paper 3 to 5 days after birth. Cognitive abilities and psychomotor development are assessed using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence - third edition - and the Charlop-Atwell Scale of Motor coordination. Psychosocial development is measured using the Child Behaviour Check List for age 1½ to 5 years old. In addition, several socioeconomic, parental and child confounding factors are assessed. Conclusions This study aims to clarify the effect of mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy on the neurodevelopment of the offspring. Therefore, the results may have important implications for future public health recommendations, policies and practices in food supplementation.
