Title Promoter Affiliations Abstract "The Schooled Society Index: Measuring the increased centrality of education and its societal consequences from a global perspective" "Bram Spruyt" "Sociology, Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities" "This project studies the growth of ‘schooled societies’, a quiet revolution whereby education has gradually become a primary and authoritative institution in society. I empirically explore and map cross-national variation regarding the multiple dimensions of 'schooled societies' and its direct and indirect effects on citizen’s thinking, feeling and behaving. I aim to answer three interrelated research questions. First, how do countries vary regarding the different dimensions of the development of the schooled society and how do these dimensions relate to each other? To that end, I will construct the Schooled Society Index, an indicator or empirical typology that reflects variation in the level of development of a schooled society. Second, to what extent does this country-level indicator/typology predict relevant individual-level outcomes? Third, how does the growth of schooled societies affect different subgroups (e.g., gender and religious-based groups)? To answer these questions, I will develop a global comparative and publicly available dataset relying on country-level data from international databanks and content analyses, and conduct indicator or typology-construction analyses based on this dataset. I will link these data with survey data from the World Values Survey and European Values Study and assess the effects of the growth of schooled societies on religiosity, political participation and feelings of social malaise/anomie." "SBO project with a primary societal finality: Digital ageing: How seniors can appreciate the benefits and avoid the pitfalls of a digitalizing society" "University of Antwerp, Research Foundation - Flanders, Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities" "the overarching theme for this interdisciplinary SBO-project is the question of how agood life for seniors in the digitalizing society is possible." "SBO project with a primary societal finality: CAPACITY: Flanders Project to Develop Capacity in Palliative Care Across Society" "Joachim Cohen" "KU Leuven, Ghent University, Clinical sciences, Family Medicine and Chronic Care" "1) To appraise and understand the potential for broad capacity-development around palliative care in individuals, communities, care organizations and society. 2) To develop and evaluate innovative interventions for broad capacity-development around palliative care" "Transitional Justice in Zimbabwe: Tactical gambits of local civil society organisations in a fragile and conflict-affected society" "Stephan Parmentier" "Leuven Institute of Criminology" "This PhD proposal seeks to study the underexplored leadership role of civil society organisation (CSOs) in transitional justice contexts, particularly focusing on initiatives that are implemented beyond State-led processes. To this end, the research firstly aims at analysing the emergence and subsequent evolution of the transitional justice discourse through the lens of critical scholars and practitioners and at examining the different interpretations that scholars and practitioners have made of the terms ‘civil society organisations’ and ‘fragile and conflict-affected States’. This analysis will support the setting of the theoretical framework upon which the research will rely when scrutinising relevant legal initiatives conducted by Zimbabwean CSOs, which will form the case study. Each of these initiatives will be presented by way of providing an in-depth understanding of the context in Zimbabwe and the rationale that led to the planning and implementation of such initiatives to identify common patterns that may guide future endeavours. Lastly, the research intends to extract the key internal and external challenges that Zimbabwean CSOs endured when attempting to advance a given transitional justice pillar. The aspiration is to produce a logical and structured framework where the barriers towards the advancement of transitional justice goals and pillars are isolated and examined with the aim of providing local CSOs, scholars and practitioners with a practical guide of elements that motivate and encourage the development of new strategies in Zimbabwe and other transitional justice contexts." "Strengthening of the participation of the Congolese civil society to the development of Congo through the support of applied research for civil society." "Patrick Develtere" "Leuven International and European Studies (LINES)" "This 2-year project (2008-2010) is financed by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR-UOS) and builds further on the partnership between HIVA/KULeuven and the Chaire de la Dynamique Sociale (CDS) of the Université de Kinshase (UNIKIN). The project aims at the strengthening of the research capacity of CDS/UNIKIN and 2 partner universities in Lumbumbashi (UNIKI) and Kisangani (UNIKIS), and involves the execution of a number of capacity development activities in Congo, in-service training in Belgium, and joint research activities. The project wishes to contribute to the strengthening of the participation of civil society to political and economical decision-making processes in Congo, through the improvement of the quality of the interaction between research institutes and civil society actors." "Theatre society. Vernacular literary culture and the development of an early modern knowledge society in the Low Countries, 1450-1650" "Department of History, Department of Early modern history" "Between 1450 and 1650, the world of performative literature became the centre of a Western European media system. Performative literature also became a model for the public organization and communication of knowledge. This project studies ways in which the institutions, agents, and media of the theatre society of an early modern metropolis (in this case Antwerp) translated and applied knowledge and information." "Peter Thijssen" "Technologies for Nuclear Energy State Owned Company (RATEN), CIEMAT, University of Cassino, University of Exeter, Milan Vidmar Electric Power Research Institute, Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK) MOL, Polytechnic University of Milan, Matej Bel University, Media, Movements and Politics (M2P)" "Using a deliberative approach, ECOSENS will analyse citizens' views and risk perceptions, benefits and potentials of current and new nuclear technologies in the context of major societal challenges (climate crisis, sustainable energy policies, energy security). It will review through a socio-ethical lens the uptake of recommendations on stakeholder engagement and transdisciplinarity (notably integration of social sciences and humanities) in nuclear research and decision making, developing recommendations to overcome challenges. Societal stakeholders (authorities, industry, academia and civil society) are engaged to explore and co-construct possible energy futures and the role of nuclear energy therein. Sustainability assessment of current nuclear energy technologies will take into account the entire life of the nuclear investment including the nuclear fuel cycle. Integration of new technologies (Gen III+, IV, SMR) is then explored in the context of the future energy market and societal developments to identify the possible roles of nuclear energy in the climate neutral economy targeted for 2050. Multiple perspectives (nuclear experts, social scientist, stakeholder, society) are integrated and methodological recommendations for sustainability assessment are agreed. To address the weaknesses of existing economic models, ECOSENS develops a novel model based on the system of provision approach in order to create and calculate indicators relevant for a plethora of stakeholders (consumers, governments, suppliers). The model will include the ""social discount rate"" and considers the limits of our planet, as reflected in the ""circular economy"" system. A series of national case studies evaluates the model and provides relevant recommendations to stakeholders. ECOSENS activities and results will be largely communicated and disseminated through the network of stakeholders established to support innovative involvement, as well as through Open Access facilities." "Civil society Innovation in Flanders - investigating and designing new models of social - CSI-Flanders" "The general scientific main objectives are 1) mapping of the changing environment in which civil society organizations (CSO's civil society organizations) operate; 2) analyzing and evaluating the impact of these changes on three levels: the relationship CSOs citizen relationship CSOs-government, and the internal functioning of CSO's; 3) identifying and analyzing innoverene practices of service and political work." "Youth work that works The learning society as a challenge to the public role of youth work." "Jan Masschelein" "Education and Society" "In the current youth work practice and research, the societal role of youth work is approached in an instrumental way. Youth work is seen as a tool that enables youngsters to gain certain competences which prepare them for participation in public life, strengthen their societal position and help to fight social ‘ills’. What is missing is an educational approach of youth work. This approach would allow for an educational understanding of the societal role of youth work. Therefore, the proposed research first intends to investigate youth work practices as educational practices, that is, to come to an articulation of their distinctive pedagogical forms (as different, for instance, from the pedagogic form of schools). Second, the research aims at an educational articulation of the societal meaning of youth work by focusing on the public, emancipatory dimension of the pedagogical form. In line with recent research on the public role of formal education (at schools, universities), the notion ‘public’ is used in a very specific way: we will take the notion of the ‘public’ as a ‘term of action’. Hence we investigate how youth work practices include public forms of gathering that to a certain extent (can) disturb the given order of society (and can be emancipatory). By investigating the educational, public and emancipatory dimension of youth work in concrete cases of youth work practices, this project aims at the development of an educational youth work theory."
