"Accelerate co-creation by setting up a multi-actor platform for impact from Social Sciences and Humanities" "Alexis Dewaele" "Department of Experimental clinical and health psychology, Research Co-ordination Office, Department of History, University of Göttingen, University of Glasgow, Aalborg University, University of Barcelona, Sapienza University of Rome, University of Groningen, Tallinn University, University of Tartu, Newcastle University, University of Cagliari, Roma Tre University, Dalarna University, Centro de Estudos para a Intervencao Social, University of Zagreb, University of Debrecen, CENTRO DE ESTUDOS SOCIAIS" "Traditional valorisation approaches focus on linear processess: from academia to society. In order to bring valorisation to a highter level, all relevant actors need to cooperate in an equal setting: co-creation. Co-creation transcends boundaries, but it does not happen naturally. Therefore, the ACCOMPLISSH consortium, consisting of 14 universities from 12 countries (representing all the sub disciplines in SSH), will actively involve the other partners from the so called Quadruple Helix (industry, governments and societal partners) within the project. The project has chosen an Open Innovation approach." "Towards a Research Network in the Social Sciences and Humanities in Karnataka" "Balagangadhara Rao" "Department of Comparative sciences of culture" "The project will create a network of researchers at universities and colleges in Karnataka, which will participate in rejuvenating and decolonizing the social sciences and humanities in the region and meet the local demand for scientifically informed debate on societal issues. The research network will emerge through a range of activities: workshops, expert classes, lecture series, national conference, research activities, dissemination activities (cultural week and pilot courses in engineering colleges and public lectures)." "A valorisation programme for social science and humanities research on algorithmic systems" "Pieter Ballon" "Gerontology, Business, Interdisciplinary Historical Food Studies, Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology, Communication Sciences, Brussels Centre for Urban Studies, R&D centraal" "The role and importance of social science and humanites (SSH) has become more and more acknowledged in Research, Development & Innovation (RDI) strategies, methodologies, workprogrammes and funding schemes. It is becoming widely understood that technology is not developed in a vacuum but exists within a social and cultural context. Social science research helps to identify potential benefits and -risks, ethical considerations, and unintended consequences associated with the implementation of new technologies. The integration of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) has become a key principle throughout the Horizon Europe Programme in all of its clusters, including missions and partnerships. SMIT is acknowledged as a top VUB and IMEC research center that focuses on the interaction between digital technology and society. As IOF Gear research group, we want further valorize SMIT’s position on regional, national as well as international level on exploiting and strengthening our research portfolio (in terms of innovative tools, methods as well as collaborations) in order to enhance our value as an SSH research partner for RDI projects, especially in the context of AI. For this, we will develop a valorisation strategy based on three different research clusters in which SMIT expertise has been integrated: Human-AI, AI for Human and AI & Governance. The programme will result in the development of measuring & monitor instruments, new research collaborations and new valorisation formats, notably (but not only) via our three Knowledge Centres (Mediawijs, Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij and Mediapunt) as well as the exploration of licensing strategies. The consolidation of a specific SSH-for-AI research strategy, service offering and supporting tools will position SMIT as reference SSH centre for RDI in AI. It will enable to continuously optimize our research and valorisation strategy to support industry, government and other academic partners in addressing research challenges related to user (user experience, user engagement, behaviour analysis, technology acceptance, HCI, trust & ethics), market and business (data-ecosystem mapping, data-governance, media repertoire) and policy (media-policy, policy analysis & recommendations, inclusion, data-driven decision support systems…)." "The Gerontopole Brussels - Centre of expertise for Gerontology at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel - Central theme: Active & Healthy Ageing" "Ivan Bautmans" "Clinical sciences, Public Health Sciences, Electronics and Informatics, Metajuridica, Physiotherapy, Human Physiology and Anatomy, Movement and Sport Sciences, Psychology, Gerontology" "The interdisciplinary research program of the Gerontopole Brussel searches biological, medical, psychological, social, functional and environmental predictors of frailty/robustness. This project is called the Brussels study on the early predictors of frailty (BUTTERFLY). A lot of data is already collected from community dwelling older persons. Now, in this study, the focus is on the most important predictors of robustness/frailty. Besides the data from the BUTTERFLY Study, data from the Belgian Ageing Studies (BAS) will also be used. In the BAS, people need to score themselves on different aspects of their living conditions. These most important predictors will be used to screen people’s robustness/frailty. To make things accessible, these predictors will be included in an ehealth application, where people can score themselves. This will be realised in close collaboration with the World Health Organisation. People who scored themselves will be invited to visit a Healthy Ageing Center. Here intervention to prevent the development of frailty and to optimising Active and Healthy Ageing are discussed with the person. We plan to install a Healthy Ageing Center in six communities in Flanders." "Centre of Expertise for Environment & Health (2012-2015)" "Ilse Loots" "Epidemiology and social medicine (ESOC), Society and Environment" "The Centre of Expertise 2012-2015 is an inter-university consortium of research teams, specialized in environmental health. A broad spectrum of scholars cooperate in specific and long term research projects: toxicologists, physicians, epidemiologists and sociologists. This 3th generation center focusses on the (reference) human biomonitoring of three age groups at the one hand, representative for Flanders and the comparative human biomonitoring of hot spot areas on the other (Gentse Kanaalzone). The group of prof. Loots takes the lead for the science-policy nexus, risk communication and risk governance. Techniques are developed to open up the scientific research design and the group results for concerned parties and to encourage citizens and stakeholders to get involved (beyond study participation). Also social diversity and environmental justice are on the research agenda: not only in the data-analysis, also an additional recruitment strategy is experimented." "Valorisation of intersex research: information brochure on intersex / dsd for parents and young people & continuation of sounding board groups" "Chia Longman" "Department of Languages and Cultures" "Intersex / DSD (differences of sex development) is an umbrella term for various congenital conditions, in which the blological development of the sex differs from what medid generally mean by 'man' or 'woman' (van Lisdonk, 2014: 10). Interest groups often argue that binary thinking about gender and the social unfamiliarity of intersex / DSD leads to a lack of knowledge and openness in society, stigma, shame, and sometimes non-medically necessary treatment (NNID, 2013, Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe, 2015 Human Rights Watch, 2017). It is unknown whether parents of a child with intersex / DSD and adult experience experts also experience this and what the consequences are for them. Where do people meet with healthcare professionals, with partners, friends, at school and in other social contexts, and what support need and experience do they have? Are they seeking contact with fellow sufferers and what does that mean? What are their experiences with any specialized medical care, treatment and / or psychological counseling, issues of openness of information, involvement of the parents and the child / adolescent in decisions about treatment and the timing thereof?" "Time poverty & entrepreneurship" "Saskia Crucke" "Department of Marketing, Innovation and Organisation" "The development of entrepreneurial opportunities is by nature a future oriented process. Hence, engaging in such a process is difficult for those who focus on the present because of time-poverty. Supported by case studies of female entrepreneurs in rural Rwanda, this research aims to develop theory on how this temporal contradiction can be overcome." "Knowledge Centre Data & Society" "Lieven De Marez" "Department of Communication Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, KU Leuven" "The knowledge centre focuses on ...1. Monitoring and supporting AI innovation in Flanders, by means of knowledge creation wrt societal impact of AI (specifaclly adressing democratic, ethical & legal dimensions) 2. Formulating recommendations wrt legislative framework supporting responsible innovation for AI implementations in Flemish industry 3. Initiating broad interdisciplinary debate in Flanders on risks and opportunities for AI in Flanders 4. Monitoring and benchmarking local and interdiscipinary policy initiatives on AI, as input for alignment with Flemish intitiatives  5. Participative co-creation of a joint Flemish vision on AI, and bringing that to European agenda6. Outreach and communication to envisioned target groups via website, social media and newsletter " "Algorithmic Transparency & Accountability in Practice" "Peggy Valcke" "Research Unit KU Leuven Centre for IT & IP Law (CiTiP), Institute for Media Studies" "This interdisciplinary project proposal significantly contributes to the debate on algorithmic transparency and accountability. In an unprecedented effort, it will empirically investigate compliance with the data protection right to an explanation. This empirical data will constitute the basis for pinpointing key issues, evidence-based policy guidance and conducting further interdisciplinary research. Moreover, it will inform the co-creation of a concrete prototype for making algorithms that affect our daily lives understandable to the average individual. The project enables the two participating centers to (re-)collaborate, with their cumulative expertise in law (CiTiP) and social sciences (Mintlab) enabling a more holistic perspective on a critical societal issue. The project has a high valorization potential, from media-attention and usefulness to regulators, to serving as a catalyst for future research collaborations, in and outside the KU Leuven."
