Name "Responsible (Organisation)" "Activity (Organisation)" "Affiliation (Researcher)" "Wildlife Management and Invasive Species" "Anneleen Rutten" "Wildlife management in relation to humans and biodiversity is central to the Wildlife Management and Alien Species team. Damage management is the first important area of focus. The team seeks, among other things, management tools and strategies to reduce the negative impact of both indigenous and exotic species. Another important area of focus is the sustainable use of indigenous populations: what are the prospects and preconditions for the sustainable use of these populations? The possible role of sustainable use in the context of biodiversity conservation is also investigated. With its accumulated expertise, the team aims to deliver services, products and technical knowledge to target groups and government bodies working in the area of wildlife management. The team also acts as a contact point at INBO for queries relating to alien species.     " "Species Diversity" "The Species Diversity team investigates the state and trends of populations of species in a regional (Flanders), national (Belgium) and international context with a view to the conservation and management of biodiversity. To this end, it charts the biotic and abiotic habitat requirements of species, interactions between species, and the impact of human activities on species in order to explain the observed trends. The methods used include determination of potential habitats, species surveys, monitoring protocols, Red Lists and criteria for determining the local state of species conservation. In addition, the team develops methods to optimise ecological, distribution and trend research. Moreover, it manages a number of significant and comprehensive species databases (e.g. of flora, butterflies, waterfowl, monitoring networks, and breeding birds  including general breeding birds, specific breeding birds, and waterfowl counts). To achieve these goals, the team works as part of a network of INBO colleagues and other domestic and foreign experts. " "Species Diversity" "In order to monitor the condition of plants and animals (Natura 2000, Water Framework Directive, Red Lists, etc.) in Flanders in a thorough scientific manner, the Species Diversity research group develops new monitoring networks and optimises existing networks. The group also coordinates the annual collection of data for these networks. However, monitoring existing conditions and trends is not enough: it is important to identify problems in good time so as to take appropriate action. The Group therefore also conducts research into the driving forces that explain the observed trends."
