Therefore, in addition to high-level management to monitor progress in the NCCs’ development, the main task of the overall activity is to support national centres in setting up their individual operational frameworks, while accessing and making the most of the experience and expertise currently available at national and European level." "Constructing the image of Europe in post-reform China: Chinese media reportage of Europe since 1978" "Patrick Pasture" "Modernity & Society 1800-2000, Leuven" "The landmark ‘reform and opening-up’ policy launched in 1978 by the Chinese government preluded the country’s transformation into an economic superpower and opened a new chapter in the history of its intricate relations with external actors. The inpouring of information from the West, previously blocked by the decade-long Cultural Revolution (1966-76), offered the Chinese public new and sometimes conflicting perspectives to see the world, including Europe. Both official and popular discourses on Europe have undergone continuous changes in China since the reform, adapting to the evolving domestic circumstances and China’s view of its position in the global arena. Such discursive changes are manifested in media reportage of Europe in the post-reform era, during which Chinese news media, albeit remaining under tight state control, have gone through drastic institutional, technological and ideological evolutions. In a time when political and academic debates over Sino-European relations and their respective global repositioning are heating up, this study intends to provide a historical analysis of the image of Europe in China’s post-reform media discourse and the media practice through which such an image is constructed. The analysis will be based on a variety of primary sources including media reportage samples, archival documents, internal communications, and interviews with journalists and other media stakeholders. The sources will be retrieved from four prominent Chinese media, among which two are state-run and conservative, the other two marketised and liberal. The envisaged results of this project will contribute to the historical scholarship on contemporary Sino-European relations and the external perceptions of Europe, while offering practical insights to European stakeholders who deal with Chinese media. The researcher works on this project as PhD fellow of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO). " "ÉMIGRÉ EUROPE. Civil Engagement Transfers between Eastern Europe and the Low Countries, 1933-1989" "Kim Christiaens" "KADOC - Documentation and Research Centre on Religion, Culture and Society, Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Eötvös Loránd University Budapest, Charles University (Univerzita Karlova)" "The research project investigates Polish, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian émigré communities in the Low Countries from the 1930s to 1989. The focus of research concerns cross-cultural impacts among the communities involved and exchanges with the host civil societies. Based on archival and desk research that maps the diversity and size of migrant communities (from political exiles to labour migrants), and identifies their institutions, infrastructures and publications the project will design a model for creating a digital gateway to the study of European émigré communities. This map-based digital research tool will be linked with existing digital datasets and repositories. The principal aim of the project is to connect the history of émigré communities to the foundations of the European project based upon the assumption that Western European social movements and civil values were developed in dialogue with émigré communities, and therefore they are just as much a part of the cultural heritage of Eastern Europe as of the West. In this way, the project will inform contemporary policies to resolve societal challenges in contemporary Europe, frame central problematics in a new way, and help to historicize and elaborate visions for a new Europe in a global world." "Imagining Europe from the outside. On the role of democracy and human rights perceptions in constructing migration aspirations and decision towards Europe (EUMAGINE)." "Economics, Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS)" "By means of a non-Eurocentric, theoretically and empirically sound cross-country and cross-region research design, EUMAGINE studies the impact of perceptions of human rights and democracy on international migration aspirations and decisions. Special attention goes to human rights (including women's rights) and democracy perceptions on Europe, specific European countries, and the relative popularity of Europe in comparison and competition with the US, Russia, Canada and Australia. The core idea of the project is that macro and meso level discourses on human rights and democracy influence micro level perceptions on these themes in countries of origin and transit, which in turn influence migratory aspirations and decisions." FunDivEUROPE will be based on four scientific platforms and seven cross-cutting Work Packages. The project will combine a global network of tree diversity experiments (Experimental Platform) with a newly designed network of observational plots in six focal regions within Europe (Exploratory Platform). Additionally, the project will integrate an in-depth analysis of inventory-based datasets of existing forest monitoring networks to extend the scope to larger spatial and temporal scales (Inventory platformà. FunDivEUROPE will thus combine the strengths of various scientific approaches to explore and quantify the significance of forest biodiversity for a very large range of ecosystem processes and ecosystem services. Using modelling and state-of-the-art techniques for quantitative synthesis, the project will integrate information gained from the different platforms to assess the performance of pure and mixed species stands under changing climate. In addition to the three research platforms, FunDivEUROPE will set up a knowledge transfer Platform in order to foster communication, aggregation and synthesis of individual findings in the Work Packages and communication with stakeholders, policy makers and the wider public. The information gained should thus enable forest owners, forest managers and forest policy makers to adapt policies and management for sustainable use of forest ecosystems in a changing environment, capitalizing on the potential effects of biodiversity for ecosystem functioning. The experiences gained within FunDivEUROPE will finally allow contributing to the development of the European Long-Term Ecosystem Research Network, complementing existing forest observation and monitoring networks."
