"Development and application of broadly applicable microscopy methods and probes for diffraction-unlimited fluctuation imaging of dynamic biological systems." "Johan Hofkens" "Molecular Imaging and Photonics, Laboratory of Clinical and Epidemiological Virology (Rega Institute)" "Fluorescence imaging has seen a tremendous evolution over the last decade with the advent of methods circumventing the optical diffraction barrier, which has classically limited the fineness with which samples can be resolved to about 200 nanometers. To date, however, imaging at high spatial resolution has become reality but it comes with a cost: superresolution imaging is performed at the expense of a significantly reduced time resolution, hampering studies of e.g. dynamic biological processes; conformational dynamics, binding kinetics etc. Solving these issues requires novel fluorescence methodologies and probes. In this ambitious project, we will develop pioneering multicolor confocal fluorescence methods and concomitant probes for quantitative investigations of dynamic molecular complexes in vitro and in vivo. We will validate our novel methods by applying them to different relevant and interesting biological systems such as the bacterial secretion pathway as well as the pathology of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By doing so, we can promote our novel, cutting edge methods to a large community." "Kernels, tensors and structured data." "Johan Suykens" "ESAT - STADIUS, Stadius Centre for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing and Data Analytics, Electrical Engineering (ESAT), Kulak Kortrijk Campus" "The aim of this project is to develop and analyze new machine learning algorithms for structured data by combining elements from tensor-based methods, kernels and sparsity. Objectives involve, in particular: the development of a systematic kernel-based framework for the analysis of data that can be represented by means of tensors. This includes: the development of new tensorial kernels for structured data in particular dynamical systems and graph. The in-depth analysis of subspace-based kernels and, in particular, the study of the induced similarity measure. B) Existing tensor methods are mostly unsupervised techniques. A second objective relies on convex optimization and aims at combining tensors and kernels on a broad range of learning tasks. This includes in particular the extension of nuclear norm regularization from affine tensor-based models to non-parametric models based on product kernels (such as the Gaussian RBF kernel). The use of novel regularization schemes for affine tensor-based models beyond the recently proposed approach that uses nuclear norms. The application on a number of actively studied real-life problems." "A comprehensive semantic and formal description of nominal groups that take complement clauses in English: a neglected source of grammaticalization and subjectification processes and locus of synchronic variation." "Nonlinear and Parametric Model Order Reduction for Second Order Dynamical Systems by the Dominant Pole Algorithm" "Karl Meerbergen" "NUMA, Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics Section, Production Engineering, Machine Design and Automation (PMA) Section" "Noise and vibration performance is a key parameter for assessing the quality of automotive and aerospace products. In order to gain competitive advantage, manufacturers are continually striving to reduce noise and vibrations levels. The numerical analysis of the acousticbehaviour results in huge mathematical models, in particular, for higher frequency analyses. This leads to high requirements regarding computational and storage resources. Furthermore, the cost increases dramatically when the model has a large number of design variables that have to be taken into account for the development of the optimal design. This motivates the importance of reducing the size of the models in order to reduce the simulation cost. One choice for building such reduced models is algebraicModel Order Reduction (MOR) for linear dynamical systems. The aim of MOR is to reduce the system matrixin such a way that the reduced system has similar input/output behaviour as the original system. The goal of this thesis is to use the Dominant Pole algorithm (DPA) for computing a truncated modal representation of a large scale parametric linear second order dynamical system and also largescale dynamical systems whose matrix has non-linear frequency dependency.First, we adapted the DPA for reducing systems that have an infinite number of poles.Deflation is an important ingredient for this type of methods in order to prevent eigenvalues to be computed more than once.Because of the nonlinearity frequency dependency, classical deflation approaches arenot applicable. Therefore we propose an alternative technique that essentiallyremoves computed poles from the systems input and output vectors. This method appears to be reliablefor computing a large number of dominant poles of the system.Next, we apply the DPA to parametric second orderdynamical system, whose system matrix depends on parameters. We will iteratively compute the parametric dominant poles. We consider twoapproaches. In the first approach, we compute the parameter dependent polesone by one, i.e., all parameters are taken into account together. We will useinterpolation in the parameter space to achieve this. In the second approach, the dominant eigenpairs are computed for a selection of interpolation pointsin the parameter space, independently from each other. As the eigenvectorsare continuous functions of the parameters, we use the already computedeigenvectors from previous parameter values for computing starting values ofthe DPA."
