Title Participants Abstract "Men’s (online) intimate partner violence experiences and mental health : polyvictimization, polyperpetration and victim-perpetrator overlap" "Janneke Schokkenbroek, Koen Ponnet, Wim Hardyns" "The present study examined men’s experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and associated mental health problems. Specifically, we investigated men’s (poly)victimization, (poly) perpetration, and victim-perpetrator overlap experiences of physical, sexual, psychological, and cyber IPV, and associations with anxiety and depression. Data were collected via survey among a representative sample (n = 1587) in Ghent, Belgium. For this study, the sample consisted of 557 men in a romantic relationship. We found that polyvictimization (45.8%), polyperpetration (31.1%), and victim-perpetrator overlap (26.2% to 60.5%) were rather common among men who experienced partner violence. Polyvictims, polyperpetrators, as well as victim- perpetrators of psychological and cyber IPV reported the highest levels of anxiety and depression. Our findings emphasize the importance of addressing men’s (accumulated) experiences of online and offline bidirectional IPV in research and practice, and to account for internalizing and externalizing expressions of mental health problems among male victims, perpetrators and victim-perpetrators of IPV." "Percepties rond druggerelateerde interventies op muziekfestivals in België" "Bert Hauspie, Edith Van Dyck, Tina Van Havere, Nicolas Van der Linden, Koen Ponnet" "Various drug-related strategies are being implemented at festivals to reduce drug use or the risks associated with it, including prevention, harm reduction, healthcare, and law enforcement. The effectiveness of some of these strategies has not been consistently demonstrated, whereas others remain un- explored in terms of their impact. As a result, following research question was formulated: “How do festival attendees and stakeholders perceive the impact of drug-related interventions implemented at music festivals?” A mixed-method approach was adopted to address this question, combining quantitative data collection through experience sampling method with qualitative insights gathered from semi-structured interviews. A total of 320 festival attendees and 44 festival stakeholders participated in this study. Results show, on the one hand, that none of the strategies was perceived as being able to influence the frequency of drug use. On the other hand, while harm reduction interventions were perceived as likely to reduce risky drug use behaviors, repressive interventions were perceived as likely to increase the occurrence of such behaviors. Based on these and other results, conclusions and recommendations were drawn." "Substance use and attendance motives of electronic dance music (EDM) event attendees : a survey study" "Edith Van Dyck, Koen Ponnet, Tina Van Havere, Bert Hauspie, Nicky Dirkx, Jochen Schrooten, Jon Waldron, Meryem Grabski, Tom P. Freeman, Helen Valerie Curran, Jan De Neve" "EDM event attendees are a high-risk population for substance use and associated adverse effects. The aim of this study was to examine substance use at EDM events, focusing on associations between attendance motives and substance use. Sociodemographic characteristics, event specifics, past-year use, and attendance motives were assessed through an online survey. Participants were 1345 Belgian EDM event attendees (69.44% male, Mage = 22.63, SDage = 4.03). Ecstasy/MDMA/Molly (52.28%), other synthetic hallucinogens (53.68%), ketamine (42.13%), amphetamines (40.45%), and alkyl nitrites (poppers) (32.76%) were most frequently used at festivals/outdoor parties/raves. In nightclubs, cocaine (32.29%) was shown to be prevalent as well, while other synthetic hallucinogens (15.79%) were less often consumed. At events with a more private character, cannabis (68.88%) and magic mushrooms (66.44%) were most frequently used. Aside from alcohol (47.76%), substance use in pubs/bars was negligible. Overall enjoyment was demonstrated to be the key attendance motive, which was succeeded by those relating to music and socialization. A wide range of motives proved to be more important to users (e.g., dance, exploration, escapism, excitement, alcohol, drugs) than non-users, while some were associated with the use of particular substances. The prevalence of substance use was shown to be dependent on the specifics of the setting. Moreover, the idea of a three-dimensional classification of the most principal motives for music event attendance was supported. Finally, correlations were estimated between attendance motives and substance use as well as specific substances. Results could enable more tailored approaches in prevention and harm reduction efforts as well as event management strategies." "Pedofiele chatforums : taboe of opportuniteit voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek?" "Charlotte Mertens, Janneke Schokkenbroek, Koen Ponnet, Wim Hardyns" "The role of multi-platform news consumption in explaining civic participation during the COVID-19 pandemic" "Cato Waeterloos, Michel Walrave, Koen Ponnet" "This study employs the O-S-R-O-R framework to examine how multi-platform news consumption is associated with civic participation during the COVID-19 pandemic (offline and via social media) and how this relation is mediated by civic talk and civic attitudes. A survey was administered to 1500 adults in Belgium. Results from structural equation modelling indicate how civic talk with weak ties is not associated with civic attitudes or participation. Analysis of indirect effects reveals that multi-platform news consumption stimulates two different types of participation, through civic talk with strong ties and civic attitudes. The results shed light on previously unexplored pathways towards participation, while providing support for the O-S-R-O-R framework and highlighting the role of social media as an emerging arena for civic participation."
