Name Activity "Academic Language Centre" "ACTO is the Academic Language Centre of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. ACTO provides language support at the request of VUB faculties and services." "Antwerp Centre for Digital humanities and literary Criticism (ACDC)" "Mike Kestemont" "The analysis and interpretation of texts constitute a central research focus in literary studies. At this moment Humanities research is increasingly being enhanced by means of automation (Digital Humanities). In addition to 'close reading' this development also enables 'distant reading', an umbrella term for new methods of digital text analysis which allow humanities researchers to discover not only micro- but also macrophilological phenomena, such as the development of narrative patterns or structures, the genesis of complex literary works, the distribution of manuscripts and books, the detection of variants between versions by means of automatic collation, computational authorship attribution or the automatic dating of texts. The research group aims to build bridges between different departments. The range of approaches is diverse. The many interconnections between the various departments find a forum in the University of Antwerp's Platform Digital Humanities (uahost.uantwerpen.be/platformdh), which brings together various researchers for lectures and discussion. We also make a special effort to share this dynamic with our students through the research/education nexus: in collaboration with colleagues from other departments, members of our research group teach the course 'Digital Humanities' in the Bachelor's programme and offer the option 'Digital Text Analysis' in the Master's programme. The research group does not approach digital research as a service or auxiliary science, but as a methodology with groundbreaking potential. This involves both a form of scaling up and a scientific strategy that is not just about computational skills, but also about creating a cluster of innovative methods. These methods can be deployed in literary studies and are also relevant to other disciplines within the Faculty of Arts, not only in order to enhance and develop existing research, but also to break new ground in the field of Digital Humanities." "Antwerp Cultural Heritage Sciences (ARCHES)" "Geert Van der Snickt" "Contemporary conservation science is interdisciplinary and includes aspects of the natural, human and social sciences. Furthermore, the conservation-science is characterized by a continuing integration of practice and theory. A strong ""cross-linking ""between these various aspects is necessary to be able to carry out. Finally, it is important to point out that the conservation-science also has its own history, culture, ethics and philosophy. The research connects its actions on three main 'focal points' of UA policy: sustainable development; city history and materials research. The research group 'Heritage & Sustainability' will also have the foci significantly spearheads' City History 'and' Materials Research. This is because (1) the focus of the Training conservation-restoration (Historic Interior of the Low Countries), (2) the specificity of the H / S practice (historical techniques and materials), (3) the expertise and ongoing research projects and, finally (4) how these complements each other, support and strengthen. The concept of ""sustainability"" is regarded as the framework within which the components 'urban history' and 'materials research' can be understood. For that reason, there is need for thoughtful development of a transdisciplinary framework. The research is translated concretely into the conservation-restoration practice in the form of research and development of advanced, non-invasive treatment methods (eg atmospheric plasma.) research on historical techniques and materials; development of a critical theory of heritage with a view to enabling and promoting a transdisciplinary conceptual framework and the research and development of innovative forms of collection preservation, management and curatorship." "Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts (ARIA)" "Pascal Gielen" "ARIA does, together with the three Schools of Arts of Antwerp (Sint-Lucas, The Royal Academy for Fine Arts and the Royal Conservatorium Antwerp), research in, with and about the arts and it supervises this kind of studies. Research of ARIA has a broad range from technical scientific and biological (material) research to interpretative theoretical and empirical studies about the role of art and artistic practices in society. Research focuses also on the economic, political and social labour conditions of artists and on the effect on artworks and artistic work of these (changing) contexts. What the research in ARIA bounds is the actual arts. Everytime ARIA starts from (technical, interpretative, social) research problems which arise from specific artistic works or artistic processes. Together with scientists, artists and designers the institute searches for solutions and answers to those problems." "Applied Language Studies" "The research unit for Applied Language Studies investigates language skills processes and products in tertiary education. Language awareness raising and language training in higher education typically take place in an academic context. However, they also attempt to serve future professional objectives, i.e. academic and specific (business and medical) purposes. Currently, the following topics play a central role: language awareness teaching, learning and learner variables (e.g. attitudes, perceptions, metacognitive knowledge and skills), genres such as academic literacy (e.g. academic writing and reading), forms of academic and professional communication, and learner contexts (institutionalised versus informal learning)." "Applied Linguistics" "The Department of Applied Linguistics (TTKA) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel offersBachelor's and Master's programs in Applied Linguistics, Translation, Interpreting andJournalism. The TTKA Department has two internationally oriented Research centers that want to highlight the multilingual context of Brussels: BIAL, The Brussels Institute of Applied Linguistics, and BIJU, the Brussels Insitute forJournalism Studies."
