Ralph André Bisschops

    Ralph Bisschops (PhD 1992, Vrije Universiteit, Brussels) is a retired staff member of the Brussels Education Center. He held positions as a researcher at the FWO, the University of Ghent; presently he is voluntary research associate at the VUB (Philosophy & Ethics dept.). He has been visiting professor at the University of Duisburg where he lectured on German-Jewish history, Samuel Beckett, Berthold Auerbach and cognitive linguistics. He is the author of a book on metaphorical language and ethics: “Die Metapher als Wertsetzung – Novalis, Ezechiel, Beckett” (1994) and together with Dr. James Francis he edited the volume “Metaphor, Canon and Community - Jewish, Christian and Islamic Approaches” (1999). He is co-founder of the book series Religions and Discourse (Oxford: Peter Lang) and also its co-editor. He has published articles, reviews and essays on theory of metaphor, literary criticism, philosophy (Heidegger), Judaism and the exegesis of the Hebrew Bible. He publishes in German, French, Dutch and English. Dr. Bisschops has become widely noticed for his pioneering research work on Classical German Reform Judaism in the 19th Century. The main focus of his research however lies on the Cognitive Linguistic analysis of religious texts and notions (Hebrew, Greek and Latin). Dr. Bisschops’ tenet: All religious (and most philosophical notions) are constructed by metaphors and metonymies which determine their meanings. He elaborated this idea in his Oxford UP-publication: “Metaphors in Religious Transformation” (2018) in Chilton & Kopytowska. Religion, Language and the Human Mind. New York: Oxford University Press. Dr. Ralph Bisschops has gathered a rich experience as the organizer of symposia and as an active participant.
