Jonas Lefevere

  • Research Expertise  (Vrije Universiteit Brussel):

    Jonas Lefevere is Assistant Professor of Political Communication at the Brussels School of Governance.

    Research

    His research focuses on political communication, with a particular interest in the impact of media on the public, the impact of election campaigns on voting behavior, and the role of issues in voting behavior and partypolitical communication strategies. He has published extensively on these topics in a variety of journals, including Public Opinion Quarterly, Communication Research, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Party Politics, and so on (Google Scholar Profile).

    Currently, he is principal investigator in the FWO-FNRS Excellence of Science project NOTLIKEUS (They Are Not Like Us), which studies polarization and perceptions of differentness between societal groups and politics in Belgium. NOTLIKEUS brings together a team from the VUB, ULB, UCL, UAntwerp and KU Leuven.

    With Silvia Erzeel (VUB), he is supervisor of a forthcoming FWO Junior research project that will study ambiguity in political party communication (2023-2026).

    With Stefaan Walgrave, he is the lead investigator for De Stemming, a yearly survey commissioned by the Flemish public broadcaster (VRT) and De Standaard.

    Together with Katjana Gattermann (University of Amsterdam), he founded the ECPR Standing Group on Political Communication, and he is a member of the Standing Group's steering committee. He chaired the Political Communication section at the 2018 ECPR General Conference in Hamburg.

    He represents VUB in the Executive Committee of The Social Survey.
