Ching Lin Pang

  • Research Expertise:I do research in the area of migration, mobility and material culture. Processes of change and more specifically the translation of cultural phenomena are central in my work. I have a regional focus on China. I adopt a triangulation of methods, combining literature study woth ethnography. My esearch topics include: Chinese coffee culture, Fashion Studies (Belgian fashion, fashion in China; fashion education), Chinese migrants in Europe (Antwerp, Prato), transnational migration China-Africa, the anthropology of aesthetics.

  • Research techniques:Participant observation and fieldwork are basic techniques of anthropologists/translation studies scholars/sociolinguists in their research on urgent issues in the current superdiverse society. More recent I also embrace online ethnography in conjunction to conventional ethnography.
  • Users of research expertise:Media: recent developments inside China and China as global player. Ik write a monthly coummn for Mo*Magazine. Academic circle: There is a shortage of expertise on China in Belgian and Dutch universities. I am often asked to participate in Summer Schools, Studium Generale, etc. China: I am often asked for presentations and collaborations in Chinese universities: Zhejiang University, Yunnan University, Lanzhou University, etc.
