  • Research techniques  (University of Antwerp):All statistical packages, software to analyse qualitative data, QCA, evaluation tools, Process Tracing, gaming. QCA is an increasingly popular approach for doing comparative case research, introduced in the social sciences in the late 1980s by Sociologist Charles Ragin: It starts from the assumption that the same phenomenon (e.g., firm performance, or election outcomes, economic growth, consumer behavior) can be caused in different ways, and explains the causes of these phenomena in configurations of other phenomena, rather than as linear combinations of variables. It thus uses ‘set theory’ rather than linear algebra, looking for necessary and sufficient conditions. It allows new forms of complexity in our causal explanations. Publications using QCA are increasingly accepted in top journals.
