Bart Cambré

Research Expertise (University of Antwerp):Bart Cambré is Associate Dean of Research at Antwerp Management School and professor of Business Research Methods at Antwerp Management School and the University of Antwerp. He currently holds the chair on Business Research Methods at Antwerp Management School. His current research involves business research methods with a focus on the configurational approach, quality of work, and organizational networks. The research projects he supervises are all linked to these topics: rethinking integrated care in Flanders, with a focus on organizational networks, work place innovation and new ways of working, and quality of research projects, with links to evaluating and monitoring the impact of research output.

QCA is an increasingly popular approach for doing comparative case research, introduced in the social sciences in the late 1980s by Sociologist Charles Ragin: It starts from the assumption that the same phenomenon (e.g., firm performance, or election outcomes, economic growth, consumer behavior) can be caused in different ways, and explains the causes of these phenomena in configurations of other phenomena, rather than as linear combinations of variables. It thus uses ‘set theory’ rather than linear algebra, looking for necessary and sufficient conditions. It allows new forms of complexity in our causal explanations. Publications using QCA are increasingly accepted in top journals.
