Ypres, Retroceded Flanders and the Transit policy in the 18th Century

Book Contribution - Chapter

This article explores the impact of the transit policy on the province of Retroceded Flanders in the 18th century. During the first half of the century, this provinces is still connected to the French economy, but this changes in the second half when the French implement a more protectionist approach on trade. From this moment on Retroceded Flanders tries to reconnect with the rest of the Austrian Netherlands. Its eastern parts (Roeselare, Menin, Ypres) succeed, but the western part (Veurne) of Retroceded Flanders fails to reconnect.
