Youth study HBM - environment 3M

Book - Report

Subtitle:Results Report
Previous environmental and blood tests indicate that the area around the 3M company in Zwijndrecht is contaminated with PFAS. The purpose of this study is to protect public health and find out to what extent young people in the vicinity of 3M are exposed to PFAS, in what way the exposure occurs, and how it is related to health.
The researchers conducted human biomonitoring (HBM), which means "measuring in humans. Measurements in blood and urine, among other things, were used to investigate how much of the PFAS contamination from the environment ends up in the body, and whether there is a relationship with health. To identify the sources, environmental measurements were also taken in the residential environment of some of the participants. By linking measurements of PFAS in blood to those of PFAS in house dust, soil, vegetables, fruits, nuts, compost, water and eggs, the routes by which PFAS enter the body were investigated. 303 adolescents living for at least 5 years within a 5-kilometer radius of the 3M plant were surveyed. This publication contains the final report and appendices.
