A Super Stretchable Organic Thin-Film Diodes Network That Can Be Embedded Into Carbon Fiber Composite Materials for Sensor Network Applications

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

© 1992-2012 IEEE. The ability to create a super stretchy sensor network with massive integrated sensors and embed it into carbon fiber composite materials will be very essential to enable self-sensing intelligent engineering materials. However, challenges arise on how to integrate thin-film switching devices into a super stretchy sensor network that could survive in the carbon fiber composite embedding process. In addition, ensuring good insulation between the sensor network and the conductive carbon fiber composite materials is also a challenge. Here, we report techniques to integrate thin-film organic diodes into a super stretchy sensor network through a high-resolution CMOS/MEMS fabrication process. We also demonstrate the functionalities of the network after it is embedded into carbon fiber composite materials. [2015-0323]
