Serum collagen markers and myocardial fibrosis
Journal Contribution - Journal Article
An increased collagen accumulation is present in almost every cardiac disease and plays an important role in the reduced heart function. N- and C-terminal propeptides of procollagen type I and III, the two major collagen types of the heart, can be assayed in serum. These propeptides reflect collagen synthesis and degradation. The usage of these serum collagen biomarkers as preventive, prognostic or diagnostic tools is not yet fully determined in patients suffering from heart failure. In this review, studies of these fibrotic markers in patients with heart failure are discussed, as well as the limitations of these serum biomarkers in the formation of myocardial fibrosis.
