Life Imprisonment in Belgium: Current Human Rights Challenges

Book Contribution - Chapter

Different categories of prisoners can end up spending their whole lives in prison in Belgium: life sentenced prisoners; offenders subjected to indeterminate measures for the protection of society (mentally ill offenders) or to preventive detention measures; and elderly prisoners who may die in prison. This chapter first
provides a description and a quantitative overview of their presence in Belgian
prisons and how this situation has evolved in recent years. It then looks
into the human rights issues raised by these different categories.
