Intervention study to improve combustion behaviour with wood in Flanders

Book - Report

The aim of this study was to develop a strategy to influence the behaviour of the Fleming by using insights from social psychology. The aim of the Flemish government was to stimulate Flemish people to fire better. An effect measurement was carried out by means of a survey among wood-burning stove users in Flanders. These were reached via chimney sweepers who divided their customers into different test groups. Depending on the test group, chimney sweepers gave test material to their customers, including a flyer and/or moisture meter. In this final report we describe the intervention carried out, the results of the effect measurement and the conclusions and recommendations. The results showed that the intervention had a significant effect on a number of behaviours, such as on a number of methods to control the dryness of wood and the perceived ease of controlling the dryness of wood. On other behaviours we found no significant effects, such as on the frequency with which suitable materials were fired and the level of knowledge. Partly due to the small sample size, the results give a mixed picture and it is not possible to draw an unambiguous conclusion.
