Guimarães rosa in English translation: History, reception, and criticism

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

The translation of Guimarães Rosa's works is discussed from various angles, highlighting in particular the difficulty of transposing the originality of his work from Portuguese into other languages. In this article, we seek to present a history of the author's translation into English, considering the importance of the historical and political context in which these translations took place. To this end, we present a brief overview of the translations and the historical circumstances surrounding the translation process, based on Barbosa (1994), Fitz (2005; 2020), Liporaci (2013), and Morinaka (2017). From this analysis, we conclude that, taking into consideration the image of Brazilian literature abroad and the relations between Brazil and the United States, the influence of these factors on the reception and criticism of Rosa's translations in the culture of arrival cannot be ruled out.
