Discrete topology optimization – Connectivity for gridshells

Book Contribution - Chapter

A cluster of canopies is to be designed for a science park. We propose steel gridshell typologies for this purpose. Each typology spans an area of 24x24m. One structural typology will be supported on all four sides, one on two and one on three sides of the square base, with large openings on the free edges of the canopy. Each canopy should have a total height of 5 m and the openings should provide at least 12x3m of unobstructed access. The grid systems are clad in either translucent or opaque plate material, creating interplay between di use natural light and shading at the interior.
