Damage accumulation in textile composites

Book Contribution - Chapter

© 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. This chapter introduces typical features of damage development in textile composites loaded in quasi-static tensile tests. It highlights similarities and differences in the damage process between textile and unidirectional cross-ply composites. Textile composites possess some distinct damage patterns that are not found in cross-ply laminates. These are attributed to the special geometrical features of the textile reinforcement. The chapter begins with a general description of the damage process in composites and continues with examples of damage accumulation in 2D and 3D woven, braided, and noncrimp fabric composites, reinforced with carbon, glass, and flax fibers.
