This chapter reviews analyses of compounding from the point of view of Cognitive Linguistics, which looks at language from the perespective of the cognitive abilities of the language user. It is organized as follows. Section 12.1 makes explicit the assumptions and claims behind the overall cognitive framework and points to its potential with respect to the modelling of compounding. Section 12.2 gives a thematic overview of the existing cognitive analyses of particular compound types. Finally, Section 12.3 recapitulates and sketches some possible avenues for further research.
