Alignment of space demands from Flemish policy themes

Book - Report

Many policy themes of the Flemish government have a spatial component. The policy options and investments that are made are decided by the corresponding together in space. Sometimes they can reinforce each other, but regularly this also results in contradictions. With a view to the efficient, effective and responsive functioning of the Flemish government, there is a growing awareness that there is a need for more policy alignment and integration. The present study specifically examines the possibilities for strengthened policy coordination
whereby 'space' forms the integrating framework for cross-sectoral cooperation. With the present assignment 'Alignment of the space questions from Flemish policy themes', the Department of Space Flanders wishes to concretize this challenge. The study tries in the first place
to get a picture of the most important space questions around ten different policy themes of the Flemish government. It concerns the following themes: climate, energy, countryside, agriculture, nature and environment, housing, cities, economy, large-scale investment programs and mobility. The screening
of these themes was done on the basis of document analysis and interviews with experts from the policy field. Then, in a second section, the focus is on formulating cross-sectoral opportunity fields for policy alignment and integration. Only those opportunities where it is clearly valuable for the Flemish spatial policy to take on a directing role are elaborated.
