Advanced structural understanding: Load path and structural function revised

Book Contribution - Book Chapter Conference Contribution

© 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London. Designing a structure relies importantly on the structural understanding of the engineer. This understanding is formed through structure theory which includes concepts like load path and structural function. This paper elaborates on these concepts within the cognitive framework of a structure as a system of elements receiving (input), transferring (process) and discharging load (output), from one element to the next, bringing load to the supports. This elaboration leads to a different approach in structural design in which a structure is not merely a mediator of forces in equilibrium, but also a system of flowing forces with elements providing a structural function as a specific relationship between inputs and outputs. As such, this paper wants to broaden the range of approaches in structural design.
