Welfare for all, or for the poor only? The social legitimacy of universal and selective welfare state policies

The PDM is intended to act as a bridge between the PhD project, which focused on popular deservingness opinions, and the longer-term postdoc project, which will focus more broadly on the social legitimacy of universal vis-à-vis selective welfare state policies. The first key objective of the PDM is to conduct a critical, state-of-the-art review of empirical literature on public support for differently targeted and differently organized welfare policies. This review will produce a novel theoretical model that will be presented in an international publication with a highly ranked journal. Getting the review published will strengthen my postdoc applications with external financers, such as the FWO (junior postdoc) and the European Commission (Marie-Curie fellowship). The second key objective of the PDM is to design a vignette experiment that puts the theoretical model to the empirical test. The experiment will be embedded in 2019 in the nationally representative 'Belgian National Elections Study'.
