Validation of Research on Nano-electronic Integrated Circuits - VeRONICa (HERC23)

The requested budget is to support the research in Flanders on the design of nano-electronic integrated circuits (or chips). These chips target a wide range of applications including telecommunications, smartphones, automotive, biomedical, sensor-interfaces, power management and so on. Research on the design of electronic integrated circuits aims to develop novel circuits concepts and innovative chip architectures which in turn leads to an improved performance like lower power consumption, higher speed, lower cost, ... To demonstrate and validate this research, measurements are needed that validate the novel design concepts. For research in engineering such experiments are crucial. This proposal request a budget to support such measurements and hardware validation. Although this research domain is typically denoted as micro-electronics, today it has truly become nanoelectronics. The shift from micro- to nano- has some severe impacts on both the semiconductor business and the research in this domain as will be discussed next.
