Utilization of Nitrones in Radical Polymerization and Polymer Conjugation (R-2813)

The aim of the project is to utilize the potential of the compound class of nitrones in radical polymerizations. As was recently shown, nitrones can be effective mediators for radical polymerization reactions (in a process termed enhanced spin capturing polymerization) and can give access to complex macromolecular architectures in a non-demanding fashion. Either the nitrones are used as carriers for functional groups to be embedded in the polymers at midchain position, or subsequent nitroxide mediated polymerizations to form ABA-type block copolymers may be carried out. Also, nitrones are of interest as these substances easily undergo dipolar cycloadditions. Hence, if polymers with nitrone endgroups are synthesized, polymer conjugations that are potentially free of transition metal catalysts may be performed, which will also lead to a broad range of applications for complex architectures and/or surface grafting of various substrates.
