Project

Taking local customs seriously: the governance of credit and finance in the Tigray Regional State, Ehiopia.

This project intends to investigate the legal framework of traditional financial institutions in the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia. Iddir and Iqqub are very old and traditional credit institutions in Ethiopia which maintain their relevance today and become even more important as the economy grows. Unlike many other traditional institutions that vanish or diminish with the introduction of foreign laws and technology, Iddir and Iqqub are flourishing and become the hub of the financial industry in many aspects. Therefore, this project systematically examines customary laws, values and practices that guide and regulate the traditional financial institutions such as Iqqub and Iddir.
