Project

Study concerning the factors that limit boys and men of foreign origin while choosing a partner.

In this research the influencing factors on the process of partner choice and the marriage of Turkish, Moroccan an Sikhs men are examinated. There's chosen for the two largest migrant groups in Belgium; these are men of Moroccan and Turkish origin. The choice for the Sikhs ensures that the focus on religion is removed as an explanatory factor on the process of partner choice. Moreover it is a recent migrant group about whom there's only a restricted research material available in Belgium. In contrast to literature about partner choice which is focused on arranged and obliged marriages, this issue is widely examined. Three possibilities are taken into consideration, a marriage with an autochthon woman, with a woman belonging to the same ethnic cultural group in Belgium and a woman living in the country of origin. Literature study was combined with quantitative and qualitative research methods in order to formulate an answer. This investigation was conducted in the period 1 July 2008 up to 1 march 2009.
