SocIoS. Exploitng Social Networks for Building the Future Internet of Services.

The European project SocIoS intends to use Social Networks as a vehicle towards the implementation of the Internet of Services concept. Social Networks concentrate four basic characteristics: mass participation of users, overabundance of material to be commercially exploited (i.e. content and social graphs), platforms based on web service technologies and the existence of tools to allow application development. Taking advantage of the social dynamics as well as the vast volumes of amateur content generated in a SN is a major step towards creating a potentially huge market of services. SocIoS views the democratization of the service lifecycle management as a major step towards the Future Internet of Services. The focal point of the SocIoS concept is the provision of the necessary tools to common Internet users that allow them to compose, provide and consume application services over abstract resources on the Web. Social Networks appear to be the perfect sandbox for realisation of this vision. They provide tools for application development allowing home users to build applications that have a business character and utilise the UGC and social graph. SocIos intends to provide such developers with cross-platform tools that enable them to manage the dynamically generated content (by SNS users) and complex social interactions by allowing them to build, deploy and potentially sell services that combine data and functionality from two or more different SN services, disregarding the underlying SN implementation. In the frame of evaluation of the technologies that will be developed, SocIoS will work on two scenarios that involve all the actors in the supply chain and span through different business models: TV commercial production and Intelligent News and Discussion Matching & Filtering. ICRI is in charge of the legal task and will draw up an extensive list of legal requirements for how UGC and Social Graph in SNS can be exploited in the Internet of Services whilst still adhering to European legislation and societal concerns on intellectual property, privacy/data protection laws and consumer protection law.
