Singing the Silences: Mediating female songs of resistance through audio-visual art.

This artistic research project explores a set of historical Iranian folk songs that have been created and performed by women. Despite the severe limitations on women's lives within the dominantly patriarchal society of Iran, these folk songs freely express opinions and emotions of their female creators concerning oppression in their lives and are shared in female spheres in Iranian culture. The aim of the project is to revisit and activate these songs and to use their narrative and formal aesthetic structures as the main model to create new audio-visual works. My intention is to acknowledge and analyze the possibilities and the quality of resistance in this art form and to adapt, translate and reflect on these in my art work, within a contemporary context.
