Project

Resource recovery from saline waste sludge through the combined use of acid fermentation and anaerobic digestion

The overall aim of the project is to develop an approach to maximize the potential of mixed-culture fermentation for high value compounds from saline waste sludge. The following subobjectives are defined: (i) analyzing the effect of pH on VFA production from saline waste sludge; (ii) promoting hydrogen production from saline waste sludge with the use of TB and APG; (iii) evaluating the feasibility and economic benefits of the effluent as organic fertilizer or feed for microalgae cultivation. In these activities, the influence of salt concentration on fermentation yield and mechanism will be an important aspect of the research.
