Preparation VLAIO Spin-off Mandate Application: ‘Solidary Mobile Housing 2.0: a Social Enterprise Spin-off for Low-cost, Inclusive and Transitional Housing‘

This IOF project aims to prepare the VLAIO Spin-off Mandate Application ‘Solidary Mobile Housing (SMH) 2.0 Spin-off’. The SMH 2.0 Spin-off is planned as a social enterprise organization with a dual purpose (creating socio-spatial impact using a for-profit business model), that will offer an innovative and configurable housing product together with inclusive and empowering socio-spatial co-creation services and tools services and tools for facilitating the implementation of this product to (public and private) developers, civic organizations, and collectives. To develop this application, three parallel lines of work are planned to be executed. In the first track, various potentially suitable social enterprise models will be explored and selected for further probing during the Mandate period. This study will also cover a case study of cutting-edge cases around the globe. The second line of this project will involve the further investigation of two emergent and innovative approaches to housing production: a) ‘housing as a service’ in relation to b) ‘housing as a transitional construct’. This track will entail the elucidation of the potential agencies of these two approaches in the context of the planned spin-off enterprise. Integrating the findings from the first two tracks, the third and the last part of this project will involve a systematic search for an ‘industrial promotor’ for the Mandate.
