Optimal protection for electricity grids with power electronics

In high voltage grids, great thermal power plants are increasingly being replaced by renewable energy sources with power electronic converters. These converters only provide fairly small fault currents with unpredictable transient features, that state of the art power system protection is not designed for. Consequently, the reliable supply with electrical energy is not guaranteed. This research will face this challenge with innovations urgently called for: First, it will specify new protection schemes, that will be transferred into future international standards. Second, it will develop methods to realize the protection schemes. The related outcomes will be a prototype as a proof of concept and patented algorithms that will be adopted by the industry.
